Economy 7- Southern Electric

Hi all,

no doubt this has been answered in previous threads but I'm in a bit of a state. We live in a 2-bed ground-floor flat which is about 10 years old. It has Economy 7 electric, but doesn't have storage heaters, it has those convection heaters (I think they're called) attached to the walls, which we use for about 30 mins in the morning and about 45 mins at night, though only in one room. We never use the tumble drier, and I've been trying to put the washing on after midnight and on the lowest temperature. Unfortunately most of the lights are halogen or are unsuitable for energy saving bulbs (which tbh I don't mind as they give me horrible headaches) and I just cannot figure out why we've had an electricity bill for over £300 for the quarter. In other peoples' experience does this sound about right? My boyfriend keeps telling me that's just how much electricity costs but I've paid bills before when I was at uni (2 years ago) that were nothing compared to this one!

Any input would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Caroline

Electricity is much more expensive than it was a couple of years ago and you're paying a premium for having Economy 7 even though you're almost certainly worse off with it.

Calculate the percentage of electricity you use at night - is it at least 40%? Better still, work out your total annual usage in kwh and put it into a comparison site with and without Economy 7 - bet there'll be quite a difference.

Halogen bulbs aren't expensive singly, it's that there's normally so many of them. I'd use lamps with low energy bulbs in rooms where you can do this.
