Home Insulation

I live in a 70's house (4 bedroom) and I would like to do my bit for the planet by increasing our energy efficiency.
I am under 60 years of age and recieve no benefit.
My electricity/gas supplier is Southern Electric.
It looks as though cavity wall insulation and topping up the roof insulation is the way to go.
Can anyone offer advice re possible grants and reliable companies to carry out the installation?
Southern Electric do not appear to do any scheme themselves.
Thanks

Not sure you would get grants - too young/not on benefits???0 -
Your own utility provider will also have a scheme, as do all of them. Do what Ken68 said though as they will point you to the cheapest one. You don't need to be a customer.
A word of warning though. If you have some loft insulation then it will cost more to add some. You get the full discount when the loft is empty.0 -
look at this thread , cheaper to do it yourself if yer quick

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/338386/focus-diy-100mm-loft-insulation-fro/...and they do bigger rolls £2.79.0

B & Q have a deal on top up insulation but they don't say how thick it is £3 rolls for £3. You can only get it in store. Second row right hand side.

The large rolls I got yesterday from Focus was priced at 20p a sq metre, same price per metre as the smaller rolls, but the latter looked a cheapo. Both supposed to be 100mm.0

Hiya,
Thehairybuilder is right - its cheaper to do it yourself (especially with all the offers on insulation in DIY stores at the moment).
Try http://www.thinkinsulation.co.uk/diy-installation.htm for step by step instructions!
Let us know how you get on0 -
I have a bit of a problem re insulation ..... I have solid walls and no attic!! Internal insulation for the walls and floors is beyond my pocket [and would make the walls damper than they already are] and external insulation is banned where I live - what to do?If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!

Focus on the windows (thermal linings for the curtains/thermal blinds/secondary glazing), floors - if you have carpets, add a thick layer of newspaper beneath the underlay.
Find and deal with all draughts (e.g. fit a draught excluder on the letter box) and make sure any radiators on external walls have reflective foil or light-coloured paint behind them. Radiators on internal walls should have dark paint behind them.
Insulate yourself
thermals, jumpers, sheepskin boots, down jackets, scarves etc are all perfectly acceptable indoor wear! 0
