Hills Prescription Diet for cats

Options
Just wondering if anyone has had experience of using this particular brand and the effects, if any, on the cat?

My cat has just been put on this diet by the nurse at my local vets. It is the r/d one.

Is Hills a good brand of cat food? And are there better brands?

  • I find that whenever I go to the vets with any of my animals, they recommend Hills...anyone would think that they get commission to flog it!!!

The cost to put my animals on Hills would be £300 a month.....NOT A BLOODY CHANCE!!!

Someone more knowledgable will be along soon I expect but IMO, they are too quick to supply HIlls and its at an inflated price!!!

  • They probably are on commission. However, I've looked on a few pet websites and it appears that what the vet is charging for the wet food, is maybe £3 more than website price, then obviously there is the postage charges to take into account.

    Hi
I had a cat who was put on this after developing kidney problems in later life. She had previously always had wet food. Getting her used to it was hard going to begin with but her health did improve when she was on it.

I think these days there are alternatives to Hills, but maybe one of the Vet professionals will be along to comment later.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

  • My kittie is 15 yrs old and is a fatty to say the least. The vet and the nurse both kinda talked me into getting her on a diet and monitoring her weight by taking her to the vets, initially once a week, the once a month. I'm just hoping they ain't going to charge for the weigh ins.
  • they dont normally charge as long as u see the nurse. have a good success with rd, but equal success with the royal canins obestiy range. the vets will have access to this if it works out cheaper for u.
i have put my cat on rd the moment, he is doing well, but he is so obsessed with food i think he'll eat anything anyway
p.s my practice doesnt get comission for selling hills products

if you can, try and purchase the food from Pet Supermarket or similar, I think you can R/D without prescription, not sure though. I did a quick Google and a 2kg of the dry averages at £15 a bag and 24 cans is about £21.

i have always fed my cats Hills - they are on Science Diet - a 2kg bag of dry food lasta bout 20 days. You can usually get a bag for around £12 from Pet Supermarket or similar (they recently had a sale and the Senior Light was £7.99 a bag - I bulk purchased and as a result it is costing me just 40p a day to feed TWO 13yo male siamese cats in total).

Maximum Impact - how many animals do you have??? £300 a month on food if you switched to Hills?
  • if u are going to have them on it for a while, id def recommend purchasng a 5kg bag as will work out cheaper in the long run, u dont need a prescription for it, have a shop around. other vets in the area may do it cheaper? worth a look
the dry is a lot cheaper than the wet and easier to measure out
  • I only have one cat. I did buy the wet food and she isn't keen on it. Luckily, the nurse said I can take it back and she would credit me on a bag of dried food.

I have 2 Mastiffs,1 GSD and 2 cats. Big time food bills to go on prescriptions diets so they aren't and in all honesty don't need to!!!

The dogs would need 2.5kgs a day between them of dry food and thats almost £250 a month before you even look at any wet food or the cats!!!
