MBNA - can't believe the cheek of it!!!

I have 3 cards with MBNA and was successful in charges claims against all 3. I'm now lucky enough (very nice other half!!) to be in a position to pay off my debts which is what I've done and have cleared my cards, or so I thought! I checked my online accounts and all balances were at £0. I then went into my online banking and noticed that direct debits had gone out that day for 2 of the MBNA accounts which would have taken me about £50 in credit on both, I was able to cancel them so I did.
MBNA have now charged me £12 on each account as my direct debit failed.
I have just phoned them and explained why I cancelled and I was met with responses that proceeded to wind me up even further. I was quite polite in explaining and woman on the phone obviously thought she was in some kind of powerful position and I was being some abusive caller (which I wasn't by any stretch) and she kept pausing (for dramatic effect!) and saying "I've listened to you politely perhaps you'll let me explan now" and "If you'll let me finish" not quite sure why she felt the need to say that as I'd not been on ranting at her!!! Anyway, upshot is they won't give me the money back. I've had further interest added which was obviously due anyway so I've paid that but left £12 on each account. I asked her to put my account into dispute as I would be taking it up with the Financial Ombudsman, she smugly asked if I wanted his address, I said no thanks, that I'd already dealt with them and won before.
I can't afford to get defaults for these though, but I'm adamant that I shouldn't pay these charges. What do I do? Am I better to pay and then try and claim them back?

Are these Credit Cards? If so, there are no Direct Debits, but you're probably talking about a Continuous Payment Authority. These can be taken even after the card is closed, if they're not cancelled with the company requesting the payment.
  • hi

annoying as it is its best to pay rather than default. as you say theyve paid up 3 times before so no reason they wont again. your credit reputation is worth much more than the charges.

if it goes to the FOS maybe it would be worth making sure any adverse credit reporting is removed and maybe consider canceling the cards at the same time.

  • Well, I wrote to them and they've not only paid back the charges but also the interest on one of the cards that I'd already paid, was only just over £3 but it was a nice gesture, what a surprise! :o

  • Hi Pinky
    Well done with your claim.
I wonder if I should try writing to them? I have just been charged interest and late payment on my MBNA for being a day late.
It was always the 25th or 26th of the month and I set up the standing order for that a long time ago, but in February they brought the date forward to the 22nd.:mad:
I have phoned and got no luck - I think I might try a letter.

I had exactly the same thing happen to me! The person I spoke to was so condescending to me it wound me up like you wouldn't believe. I started a thread also last week about the same thing. I've written them a letter and requested the £12 be refunded within 7 days.

Glad to hear you got yours refunded.

This really annoyed me. This is exactly what the likes of MBNA want you do - just give in and let them fleece you for more money.

I am glad you did not give in - and I am glad you stuck to your guns.
