Laminate Floor Chip

Hi, we've had a Quickstep Beech laminate floor fitted in the kitchen this week. I noticed on inspection that one of the boards has a very small (about 5 mil) chip on the edge. It must have been laid like this as we haven't really used the kitchen this week. I obviously don't want this to get any worse over time especially as it's in front of the fridge and therefore will be a heavy traffic area. The board in question is about 4 rows in from the edge of the wall.

The fitter is coming back for his money tonight so of course my opportunity to have this looked at is upon me. Should it be filled with something specific he'll have to go and buy?

Thanks
TinTin

  • In an ideal world he would have noticed the chip while he was laying it. If it's been laid on an even surface, it would be hard to chip the edge unless you have placed a large heavy appliance on the very edge if it. It could be filled, or you could have it lifted and a new piece put in. It shouldn't get any worse though but merely bug you as you know it's there. It may have been a hairline crack at the time it was laid, but would have been noticed on cleaning up.
  • Thanks DaneChip. He came back last night and filled it. Like you said, he thought it must have been done when the big US style fridge was moved back into place. He has filled it and now it's very hard to spot. I'm glad it shouldn't get any worse so thanks for that. If somewhere down the line it did get worse I have a spare box of the floor now in the loft that I'll keep for such an occurance.

For your info, Quickstep is very easy to lift and replace.

We had a leak and several boards were damaged. The fitter lifted a large area and replaced the damaged boards with new and I cannot see any join and the colour match is perfect.

I need to do a DIY fill on a chip in my laminate...do you know what sort of filler i'd need to use, and where i might buy it from??
    thanks.

also look in your local Poundland, got 3 tubes of the stuff in there in different colours, so you should find something to suit your floor. Dunno if it's any good but worth a shot.

    thanks.

I now always use hard wax on my laminate and my real wood floor. Brilliant stuff imo and as near as invisible as possible as long as you take time to do a neat job.

  • Try a product called Chipfill, by UNIKA.

Quick-Step also manufacture the chip filler to each specific colour in their wood range. Try your local large laminate retaier for this.
