Have a word with meself!!!

As you can see form my signature I am in debt and so far am doing well paying it off, quite pleased with myself actually, but there is one thing I cannot seem to fix and that is my addiciton to buying magazines!!!

I love buying trashy celeb mags and health mags and spend far to much money on them, I buy them all!

Can anyone help me STOP this please, I really do try, but I just go into a shop and see the glossy cover and before I know it I have handed over £2/£3 and am reading the latest celeb gossip!

Plus I do not even read them throughly, I just skim through!

They are such a waste of money, but I somehow convince myself that I deserve the treat, but such a waste of money.

I wish there was a place you could go to which has ever single magazine and you can just go there and read what you like when you like, for free of course!!!

Any suggestions??

Thanks
xx

I used to have your problem, and you have to be harsh with yourself, AND the magazines.

Next time you look through a magazine, make a mental note of everything in there that you've basically seen or heard before, and every picture that has already been in all the papers. And on health magazines - you've read so many of them for so long I bet you basically already know whatever they're going to tell you... you don't need to read them.

Besides which, there's so much that's FREE on the net! (For celeb tittle-tattle, I'd much rather read popb**ch.com or holy moly cus they're MUCH juicier anyway!)

What fully put me off trash magazines was spending some time in a few magazine offices: you realise how so much of what goes into it is just pappy recycled stuff fed to them by PR bods, or cannibalised from other media sources anyway.

In most supermarkets you can get a really popular book for less than your average monthly mag, and that'll last you loads longer.

Either that or go sit in the doctors' waiting room and read as much dog-eared, coughed-over Hello as you like for free! :rotfl:

    Good luck!

I did the same thing, and for christmas my mum subscribed to essentials for me for a year, and because its a treat i enjoy it so much more, the rest of the time i swap magazines with friends, and look on the internet. You can also get magazines from the library and from charity shops.
Sounds like your doing well, keep up the good work.

    Hi Kevicho

Thanks for your suggestions, I am determind to kick the habbit!!

Well, I got a refund on my round the world ticket in Dec (yes thought I could travel AND pay my minimum payments, so stupid of me!! Had lightbulb moment, cancelled trip) got £1000 back, went straight to debt.

Pay off about £850 a month from main job income (£1340pm), have a second job to.

Will be getting my bonus in Feb to help pay off more :j

Go online, much more fun. Find forums to join and you can gossip to your heart's content with others about celebs, tv progs, all sorts of stuff, and it costs much less as you already have internet connection. Just do a google search for something which interests you in your mags, eg. Celeb gossip :j
    ;) debt free...yippee

Thanks everyone, you are all right and I will do my very best to kick the habbit!!

Your right Jesster I do end up reading the same stuff twice, and the mags print the same stuff anyway and half of it is rubbish!

Will look more on the web.

Wow just looked at yearly subscriptions and they can be over £100, that's how much I must be spending on mags or MORE even - what a waste.

Right - my challenge to myself this month - Do not buy any mags! (Brought one today, so will make that last!!!

    Cheers

  • Hi

Just thought I'd add my two penny worth! I am exactly the same and love all magazines, not just the celeb ones! My Mum's friends donate their mags to her and they get passed on to me - OK they are not always up to date, but they're still good to read. So maybe you could set up something like this? As well if you go to the markets (and charity shops) you can sometimes get last month's magazines for 50p or so! And as regards websites, one of the good ones for celeb gossip is the new woman site!

    Hope this helps!
