Help re trip to Tenerife?

Hi all this is probably going to sound bonkers but we're going to Tenerife and were thinking about going on a day trip to Mount Teide but it says it's 7 thousand feet above sea level and my other half has asthma and I get vertigo so I wanted to ask if anyone here had been there and whether it was hard to breath or if they suffered any dizzyness etc.

Also we are thinking of going to see the Pyramids at Guimar but wanted to know if anyone's been there and if it's worth it.

Oh I also have bad RA so my walking's not great so any info on what these places are like would be very helpful.
Thanks

  • Hi - no need to worry about your asthma really, just make sure you take your inhaler with you. I went up when I was just getting over an asthma attack and I was absolutely fine.

The pyramids are a great trip, we hired a car and went on our own. It was very interesting, especially the links with the Egyptians.

    Hi Tabunny
As a couple that has been going to tenerife twice a year for the last 10 year I would recomend that you do the Teide trip as your main trip. It is a great day out with plenty of chances to take photos. I would also say that if you are brave enough get a Bono ticket and use the Titsa bus service, the buses are very good and geared up for tourist and the Bono card will save you up to 50% on traveling. Eg; South airport to PDLC {where Loro parque is} will only cost 5.50Euro each. The card can be bought in many outlets costing either 12 or 30 euros and one card is for the whole family

Hey London thanks, we will be on a tour coach so won't need the bus thing but thanks for the info. The only thing I'm worried about with the Mount Tiede trip is my legs as I'm not really able to walk far and I don't think it's the kind of place to take a wheelchair, so I'm still stumped as to what to do. I know I would dearly love to do the mountain trip but will have to see what dr recommends I think. Thanks again.

  • It depends on how you do your day trip. Most organised excursions Jeep/coach only go to the base of the cable car (elevation 2,200m) so you won't be going any higher than that.

The cable car goes to approx 3,500m, you can't go to the absolute summit (approx 3,712m) unless you have a special pass.

You could consider one of the Teide by night tours where you go Star gazing with an astronomer, haven't done this myself, though I have been up there (well about 2,000m up) at night to look at hthe stars. I've heard good things about this tour. Check the cycle of the moon before (ie less moon = more stars visible).

Whatever you do the scenery is pretty impressive.

  • Hi TaBunny,

I highly recommend doing a search on www.tenerifeforum.com for information about Mount Teide, there are so many threads on there that I didn't know which one to point you in the direction of!

For information about the Pyramids of Guimar, have a look here and here. Personally, I would suggest going to Teide over the Pyramids if you only have a choice of doing one or the other. The views are absolutely amazing! I don't think your athsma will be a problem although I suffer too and find that the air gets very thin up there so you have to take deeper breaths but that may just be me? I would take your inhaler with you anyway just incase. I hope this helps and that you have a great holiday whatever you decide to do :)

    Hi Tabunny
No probs with info {glad to help} If you are doing it as a coach tour you will park up in the parking area in the valley below the cable car, the area around that is flat so you would have no problems moving around and would still be able to get some very good photos of Teide and some of the rock formations as well as the surrounding area. The moonlight trip that Dave talks about I have been on and I would say a few things regarding it, it is a very good trip but it is not cheap and dependent on the time of year you go and if the wind is coming from the African coast you can get the dust that could ruin any good views of the sunset also the stargazing is done in a fieldlike area and {as it has to be} it is pitch blak and you are above the light polution. If anyone would like to do it I would say that it is something you would remember for a very long time.We have also been to Guimar a number of years back, my wife and myself found it a good trip as you walk round the remains of the pyramids there is also a scale model of the Kon tiki along with a short film show {to explain about the things you have seen, there is a cafe/bar on site as well for any refreshments you would like but as much as we would like to return to see it again one day I would say that Teide is the one trip that everyone should do
