Closing bank account and cancelling Direct Debit?

When a bank account is closed (e.g. Icesave, Kaupthing Edge, and any other desired), how important is it to cancel the direct debit instruction?
It's just occured to me that I've never done this wioth any of my old accounts, and was wondering about security as well as 'cleaning up' my records.
To cancel a direct debit you have to write to your bank and also send a copy of the letter to the bank you wish to leave - doing this creates so much admin. and extra cost!
Is there any other (cheaper and more time efficient) way?
Thanks.

Just walk into your bank and ask to cancel the DDs. Or do it online, or over the phone.0
