Closing bank account and cancelling Direct Debit?

When a bank account is closed (e.g. Icesave, Kaupthing Edge, and any other desired), how important is it to cancel the direct debit instruction? :o

It's just occured to me that I've never done this wioth any of my old accounts, and was wondering about security as well as 'cleaning up' my records.

To cancel a direct debit you have to write to your bank and also send a copy of the letter to the bank you wish to leave - doing this creates so much admin. and extra cost!

Is there any other (cheaper and more time efficient) way?

Thanks.
