Underlay for laminate - existing carpet??

It's probably a stupid question but I would like to know exactly why an existing [clean] carpet cannot be used as the insulating/soundproofing layer beneath a laminate floor? It would save an awful lot of trouble if it would be ok....
Your thoughts please.....

Hi quatro,
There seem to be differing opinions on the question of using carpet as underlay for laminate flooring. Have a look at these threads:
can i use old carpet as underlay
changing from carpet to laminate flooring

Many thanks pink-winged, but am a tad confused now! Maybe I'll try carpet out in the smallest room to see how it goes......0

It depends on the state of the existing carpet, esp if it has underlay, my freind has just had to have all hers pulled up because the carpet and underlay underneath is too bouncy making the laminate disconnect, whereas the carpet in our new house is just cheap cord with no underlay so we can just lay ontop of that.

Yes, my old [but cleaned] carpet is very flat and not bouncy at all. The underlay that I've had recommended is very expensive I think - £147 for 2 decent sized rooms, silly money.0

I've done it before and it worked fine. Is it upstairs or downstairs, and what sort of floor do you have - concrete, floorboards etc?0

It is a bungalow and it has a wooden floor - boards on joists.0
