£12 charge for £1.03 overdrawn on Capital One

I just got charged £12 for an overdrawn of £1.03 made with my capital one.

I phoned them and all they said is 'it is a merchant fault, they should have declined and they didn't. we advise you to keep tracking of your spending..and therefore it is your responsability, there is nothing we can do'.

Is this regular? What can I do? (apart to tell them to f... ...)

  • Call them back and politely request that they credit you with the 12.00 over limit fee as a gesture of good will. They should do it, as long as you have a good payment history and haven't done this before or paid late.

Some CC companies do allow members to spend over their limit for convenience purposes, like for example you wanted to put a transaction through but it would take you over the credit limit by 1.03 :)

Maybe you would have a preferred a decline to save the 12.00 however others may prefer the transaction to go through and to suck up the fee.

Thank you for the idea. Before writing the post I tried to call them and the lady on the phone told that was 'my fault' and there was nothing I could do apart to pay the outstanding debt and cancel the card.

I know a guy that had the same problem with amex and got the charge back....capital one doesn't do it.

  • Ah, fair enough. I guess you just have to suck it up. Maybe they offer a text or email alert service to let you know when you are approaching your credit limit which could be helpful. It is harsh however for the sake of 1.03!

Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Always blame someone else.

You broke your agreement and they are having to pay on your behalf. I keep my card in credit of a few pounds so things like this don't happen.

If this is the first time you've done this it's worth giving them a call and asking -very nicely- for a one off goodwill gesture.

The credit Card Company says it was not their fault. It was the fault of the merchant who should not have let you use the card.

Perhaps it was to some extent your own fault.

  • I agree with the above posts.
Be polite. Admit it was your fauly. Ask nicely if they will please refund the £12.

  • Capital one do offer a service where they will e-mail you when you are near your limit. I have set mine to e-mail me when I am within £20, but you can set it to whatever you like. They will also e-mail you when your payment is due, I have mine set to 7 days before, but again you can set it to whenever you want.

£1.03 is harsh, I would expect to go up to 10% over and not get charged anything.
They really are "Feeling the Pinch" !
I thought MBNA would of done something like this not CAP ONE!

Then you're not living in the real world. You go over by 1p and the computer will spew out a charge and you will have no argument against it. Stick within the limits that you've agreed to.
