To produce milk or eggs, surplus males are born/hatched, which have no value, so are culled. I can undersatnd being a vegan for ethical reasons, but not a vegetarian

 i wish more people (especially vegetarians  ) could grasp this point - also the suffering that cows go through to produce milk (which is meant for their calves who are then cruelly torn away and disposed of  ) is horrendous."Atrocities are not less atrocities when they occur in laboratories and are called medical research"

Raising this thread again to see if anyone knows the cheapest place to get the gluten flour from and if it's more widely available now..........the searches I've done suggests not and the Flourbin site doesn't seem to work
LOL not having a lot of luck but really really want to make some seitanHonorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. I've just tried the flour bin link and it is working but there is a lot of white space at the top of every page to scroll through.
If you search on gluten then the gluten flour stuff is item 72
other wise then kneading and rinsing a dough made with strong wholemeal breadmaking flour and water is the cheapest way to have a go and see if you like it before ordering a more expensive ingredient.0 -
Flour bin seems to be the only place for wheat gluten. I have just bought some to make this seiten lunch 'meat'
http://vegandad.blogspot.com/2008/06/veggie-lunch-meat.html
and if you click on fake me on this blog, you will find lots of recipes using seiten, that may be useful once you have made some.

Hi,
You can get it from here http://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/ingredients/wheat-gluten-powder-1kg
It's cheaper than Flour Bin too.
I've used it to make seitan a few times and it works nicely.0 -
I made it once (or rather my partner did-I supervised). We bought normal supermarket flour-just looked for the one with the highest protein value.
Its hard physical work and you use LOADS of water-not one for those on water meters. But it was lovely and worth the effort (I was vegan at the time).0 -
Brilliant thanks guys, I did find that low carb link too, guess they're are the only options for us in the UK *rolls eyes*Honorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. Yes! I finally got some money to buy some and then the time to make something :j I made some seitan BBQ ribs that a very hunky vegan bloke sent me the recipe for, they were AWESOME especially with the Jack Daniels BBQ sauce I used :T:T :T And a massive hit with the lads, although very very filling, but then they were great the next day cold with a saladHonorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. Hi,
I'm going to have a go at this - I'm not vege anymore (thanks to pregnancy cravings for bacon butties) but don't eat much meat and have never heard of this before - looks like it might be nice0 -
I had a go at this a week or so ago, after reading this thread. I am afraid I gave up, as it was too much like hard work - you guys were not exaggarating
I think I will just remember to buy the vital wheat gluten for next time it takes my fancy.
Thanks for sharing that link earlier, Murrell. Some fab recipes on that Vegan Dad site :jLove and compassion to all x0
