Renting: Heating broken

Im not sure if this is the correct place for this post. My heating in my flat has broken and cannot be fixed until the engineer can get hold of a certain part. Should I ask my landlord for a discount on rent for the time i am without heating?? its below zero outside and not much warmer in my flat.

also, while im asking advice, When i first moved into this flat it was on a 6 month agreement, after 6 months i recieved a letter saying it would be on monthly basis from then, but the estate agent have made me pay £50 "admin fees" evry 6 months since then to renew the tenancy. does this mean i can move out anytime or not??

How long has the engineer said the part would be?

I'd rather ask for a portable heater or two than a discount. The heaters would keep you warmer :D

You are on a periodic contract now. The agency have a cheek charging you an admin fee for this. Bet they are charging the LL more. You can't move out at any time, but should be able to give one month's notice to end the day before a rent day at any time.

What does your original tenancy agreement say about notice periods? I suspect it was for an initial six month period with a rolling one month notice period after that on both sides.

How long have you been without heating? If it is only for a day or so before it is fixed then it is probably unreasonable to ask for a discount on the rent. If you are without heating for a long period then it doesn't hurt to ask.

Advice buy sooz about asking for a portable heater would be sensible.

Don't continue to pay for the "rollover" it's a "rollover lottery win" for the LA.

Get a fan heater from argos or similar. And a jumper and an extra pair of socks.
