going on hols :D but told cannot claim :(

hi we booked our trip of a lifetime to Florida in sept last year. and hubby was made redundant 3 weeks ago.
still not had confirmation that we will be getting any money, however when he signed on today we were told as we are going abroad we have to sign off and sign back on again:mad:
i can't see why we're not entitled to it when he's paid more than his fair share of taxes since leaving school,
my husband checks everyday online for jobs and can do this quite easily in florida as the hotel has wi-fi and we have a lappy.
we're off for for nearly 3 weeks and would miss one sign on day. so fustrating. we were counting on this money for the bills.
and before you ask why don't you cancel the holiday was very very cheap (£1,000 for 2 a and 2 c) so the chance of going again while kids are kids is slim - especially as hubby won't be able to get a job in his line of work and will have to start at the bottom doing something? probably factory work.
not sure what to do:confused: if i told them i was holidaying in this country i think it might be a different matter but lego land just wouldn't be the same

  • I am really sorry to say that is the way it works.

Really you should have phoned in sick .. which I know is wrong ... but there are a number of gotchas

Bottom line you, Can't be on holiday and must ALWAYS be seeking work

This happens because while he is abroad he is not available for work so not eligible for job seekers alllowance.

Put it behind you, get yourself away on holiday and have a great time
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Say for example he found a job online on day one in sunny florida, would he be prepared to fly back for an interview?of course he wouldnt,so you lose some benefit as opposed(i assume)to losing far more if you cancelled the holiday.
Go and enjoy yourselves, then come back and sign on again.
  • oh well i hope it's just the jsa that we'll be loosing.

The fact is that the National Insurance scheme is not a savings scheme that entitles people to withdraw money when they become unemployed. It is an insurance scheme to provide financial assistance when people have the misfortune to be unemployed. When someone is on holiday abroad their unemployment during the period they are away is no longer a misfortune but a certainty. Jobseekers Allowance is not intended for people who, through their own actions or inaction, make the likelihood of their unemployment continuing greater than would otherwise be the case.

A simple analogy of the insurance principle on which JSA is based is this: If you pay an insurance premium in case your home catches fire then set fire to it yourself you could not reasonably expect an insurance payout.
  • He would have been paid 1 weeks wages per year he worked there and been paid his notice, so, he shouldnt really be signing on until the notice period ended.

I think you're shooting the messenger. I was not defending the system but succinctly stating the facts. I regret if the tone of my post came across as insensitive and offensive, which certainly wasn't the intention.
