ARRRRR OMG, I have had enough of these floorboards that are squeaking in out new house on the landing mainly and in the main bedroom., we have only been there for a week and its doing out heads in completly.
We cant afford anything expensive, does anyone know of a cheapish solution?
If i knew how bad they were i would have told them to sort it before i bought it!
Help - Please!
Cheers xxx :T

I once heard that if you brush in some talcum powder it stops squeaky floorboards.
EDIT. Just found this on Google.

Screwing the floorboards down is a good and permanent cure, but be careful and only fit screws next to the orginal nail placings. This will prevent you from going through water and central heating pipes which run under the floor. On no account fit a screw where their is no orginal nail.0

We bought a new house and the floorboards squeaked. We had the joiners in several times lifting and screwing and everything else they could think of.They even ripped our new bedroom carpet and paid for a new one. But 10 years on they still squeakede and we moved! It does your head in. We even involved the nhbc but they were as much use as a chocolate teapot.travelover0

Just before we had new carpets fitted last month I went round and lifted all the squeaky boards and refitted them making sure all the gaps were even and leaving expansion gaps in there. it was fun I recomend lifting the boards before sticking anything through them
as there were pipes all over here as the central heating pump used to be under one of the floors and all the pipes to the bathroom made it fun.
It takes abit of time and effort but it was well worth it I no longer get woken up when some one goes to the loo at night
sometimes just securing the board will do but lift it to check there is nothing under it I cant put that accross enough, if you dont make sure you can get at the main tap in to the house quick0 -
Thanks a bundle littlereddevil, i think I bought your house !0

Trouble is in new builds like mine, they are not floor boards as such like planks of wood, but big sheets of MDF. Especially where they are over central heating pipes they start to expand and warp, hence the squeaking. Flippen annoying innit?
Like as already been mentioned, the only way is to screw them down, but as I have said it is the heat from pipes that causes it so be very very very careful you do not screw into a waterpipe. If you can get a pipe detector, or get someone in to do it properly so much the better. I am just about to do our bedroom, and will get somone in to sort ours out. Do you find the squeaks move every night too!!!
DWhat goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots0 -
Put silicone on the joists when you refit, this stops wood on wood. It worked for me.

I had really squeaky floorboards and managed to minimse the squeakiness down to something bearable:
First we worked out where all the joists were and marked them out (at regular intervals and underneath where floorboard ends meet.
Then we rented an industrial pipe and wire detector - more expensive than the cheap ones you can buy from B&Q etc but more accurate and went over all the floors marking where the pipes and wires were.
Then with a rented nail gun we went round nailing down every board on every joist where no pipes or wires were detected.
It was hard work and noisy for the flat downstairs for the day but not very expensive and well, well worth it!
Now when someone goes to the toilet in the night everyone doesn't have to hear about it.0 -
Melt Candle wax and pour on the tongue and grooved joints works a treat.0
