I have often thought of doing this BUT i would end up with the weirdest combos ever known to man:rolleyes:

    sausages and rice anyone????
    sausages and pasta????
    no no no no

Thats not weird. I often have those. The thing I do a lot is cut them open and fry the meat with fennel seeds . That goes really well with pasta and a basic tomato sauce.

  • Shopping online does severely cramp my style as far as impulse buys are concerned. And if I go into Tesco I can't even find the Value stuff, but on the website I go straight to the specific Value section. I also now have a rule that I try to do an online shop only when I have a voucher. As I get veggies delivered in the vegbox, and have a nice full store cupboard and freezer, I manage to hold out for a voucher most times.

thanks to my 'end of the world' food storage I've been able to eat well and normally for several weeks whilst I haven't been able to shop because of illness and then 2 weeks of snow. Sorry I don't do miminalist in the food storage area ;)

It's just as well my freezer/cupboards are full because we've had snow on & off for over a week, it hasnt melted, and today we are snowed in. I must be really bothered about this thing because I woke up dreaming that we were waiting for an earthquake or hurricane or something and that I was checking the food supplies LOL !

Mardatha - would it work just shopping for the fridge (yoghurts etc) and for fresh stuff for one week? If your oh is keen on money saving you could tell him that lots of stuff in the cupboards and freezer is going to go out of date and you need to use it soon, so you don't want to buy anything else to go in there?

To the lady with the teenage son who eats a lot, I know how you feel! My four kids are like a plague of locusts! But finally they have learnt not to empty the fridge or eat all the treats without asking! Basically I told them that this is what I have for your lunches this week, when it's gone you will have a problem and have to use your pocket money to buy your school dinners - that concentrated their minds somewhat! I don't have much in the way of snack food in the house though, if you want cakes or biscuits then you have to make them, bread is homemade, so if you are at the middle of the loaf then you are expected to fill the bread maker else there won't be any! It's things like cheese and ham that vanished, now I keep a supply of grated cheese and sliced ham in the freezer - much harder to nibble on from there! I do give them a pretty free run at toast, cereal and fruit, and they get a very large dinner and a filling pud usually - even so I often hear those words "I'm staaaaaaarving" - but I'm hard hearted and practice "the look" lol.

  • I have irrefutable proof that shopping instore costs more - I have been spending £50 (give or take) a week online for all of Jan, for 5 of us. I HAD to go to tesco on sunday, with the 3 kids and OH as I lost my cash card and my car was broken and there was things we needed for monday.
So I had a £50 list - but I couldnt get some stuff and had to buy other things, OH and kids 'wanted' things, and tres emme and mini eggs somehow got in the trolley, anyway the final total was £66! AWFUL! a £16 overspend! I have vowed never to do that again lol :):rotfl:

  • I wished this thread was here when I was in this rut in November. I couldn't have put it into words to start the thread though.

I realised what was going wrong: Fiancee coming to supermarket with me shopping=£90 or without Fiancee shopping= £50 not amazing but still a 40quid difference. I started going when he was at work making the excuse that I wanted to spend time together in the evening but not going round a supermarket.

By Christmas I was doing shopping every week and a half instead of every Thursday but still spending £50.

After Christmas I tested myself further with every fortnight at the supermarket and a trip to the fruit and veg stall at the market in between. We eat loads of veggies so couldn't go two weeks without a visit.

Next step? Bread making? But I usually buy when its on offer and freeze and don't have a bread maker. Any other ideas?

So i think I need to change my thinking --its like I HAVE to go to the shop every wed, and I HAVE to take my weekly allowance, ( plus spare in case of a red face at the checkout LOL ) and then I HAVE to use it all up. So I need now to change that pattern of behaviour...
    But how...:D

and me. I tried online shopping but found I always forgot something, or else they didn't deliver it all, no matter what I did so had to go to the shops anyway - and spent even more.

I refuse to shop at weekends (other than lidl which is really close and I don't buy too much from). I shop in my lunch hour usually. I have managed to cut down the number of different shops we go to (preferring different things sold in different supermarkets) and now have moved to shop mostly in Sainsbugs (as OH is particular and most of his preferences come from there so it's a quieter life ;)) I used to shop about 4 times a week going to Tesco one day, Aldi the next, then Sainsbugs :o

Now it's Sainsbugs plus one other shop for small bits. I have an issue with bananas never lasting the week, with OH only telling me what he's run out of when I come back from a big shop, and OH having a strict diet with the same breakfast and lunch every day - so if I run out of those things, I'm in trouble ;)

I'm debating going back to an online shop for the Sainsbugs (but have had various issues with their deliveries and drivers moaning about where I live - there's steps up to the block of flats and they moan about it).

I know I can go to the supermarket and spend less - as I do it each month for the week before payday  But as soon as I'm paid I seem to need to fill a whole trolley and order so much stuff it doesn't even fit in the cupboard!!

I know I need to change my thinking, but it's not easy :o
