Did the Council used to Own our Property?

Hi

Can anyone tell me how I'd find out if the Council once owned our block of flats? I know that our block was definately Police flats at one point but does this mean that they were council owned? Thanks for any advice!

  • Can't you just contact the council and ask them?

If the original title deeds are still in existence it will show original owner. At one time county councils owned police occupied property, but I do not know whether this is still the case.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

because if our block of flats was previously owned by the council, the council will pay for the whole block to have cavity wall insulation installed free of charge!! apparantly, the council are still responsible for all cavities in properties they used to own!

Are you sure you have this right?

It would seem strange if the council had sold a full block to a developer for them to retain any responsibility.

The council does retain some responsibility for the exterior of flats sold under the right to buy, but this would have been explained to you when you bought the leasehold to the flat (and even then the council can recover this cost through service scharges)

I spoke to the energy department at my local council office yesterday asking for advice about grants etc for cavity wall insulation. He told me that if our property was once owned by the council that the work would be carried out free of charge. I just have to find out whether it was owned by the council but i'm not sure how to find out - can anyone help?

    thanks
