Driving test booking - disabled disclosure help please?

Hi, I'm just about to book my driving test!

I have osteo-arthritis (which affects my spine, hips and knees mostly). I am always in some sort of discomfort or pain. Laying down in bed on my back or sides causes hip pain which lasts throughout the day. I can walk ok, but the more I do, the more hip pain I get. I try to not bend, lift or reach for anything for the same reasons.

I am ok to drive with a back support which I supply myself, but I drive an automatic, so as not to have to use my left (worst) knee, and applying the handbrake or twisting round for manoeuvres cause back ache and doing it repeatedly causes pain.

As many of you will know, in the application for a driving test, the DSA need to know if someone is "in any way restricted in movements or have a physical disability".

Does anyone have any tips on what I need to tell the DSA (how best to explain)? I don't want to make it sound worse than it is - I'm not in agony! I just need to take things carefully. I don't need any car modifications (as far as I'm aware) and I'm perfectly capable of driving!

Thanks!

  • Hi
How about contacting Mobilise, the disabled drivers organisation. If they can't help I'm sure they'll point the way to some one who can

    Good luck :-)
  • Hi bushbaby1103,

Thanks, I'll have a look at the site.

I'm not sure if this was the right place to post this, I might get a better response if I re-post on the travel board.

    Thanks again!

I think the description you gave here sounds ok, seems like you are in pain because of your arthritis, but are still ok to drive, so just tell them what you've told us.
    Good luck with your test!
  • Thanks La-Cara,
Right, I'll get on with booking the test then!

With my nerves, I need all the luck I can get - thanks! ;)
