disaster dla doctor seen today

hi, again, doctor saw my today from atos for my dla medical..he was very nice but only asked a few questions. i could not get up to walk ,i tried and said it was too painfull but he said try and walk..i did a bit in the end..i,m thought he might think i,m faking it by asking me to walk when i said it was hurting too much..plus he said at the end that its not up to him weather i get awarded dla or no,,it seams like he is going to give me a bad report....when he come he said he got down on the form that my main problem is arthiritus but i have had chd since birth and am about to have a new hip which he did not know about...surely my chd which has resulted in needing a new hip and my terrible back is more of a problem than the arthritus.....i,m just really worried again now as it was terrible waiting to see doctor,,i was terrified for the week leading up as i get really scared around people and knew i would be no good explaining things to the doctor...i thought what i had to say to him ,but when he come today i went blank and only answered his questions he asked..he was only here about 20 minutes....he also said i need to sign the form but he forgot..i just remembered after he left..will he need to return for me to sign it ?....i was so worried about seeing doc that the last 2 days i have been thinking strange things like when i was very depressed before because of the worry so if i am turned down for dla i,m not going to try again....its awfull...

  • I think that perhaps you should have had a representative with you or someone you could trust like a relative, health worker, social worker.

Usually you need a professional who knows you and your medical history well enough to vouch for you when you fill in your DLA forms. When I filled in my son's forms I got his disability health visitor to check it over and sign it and she verified everything I said in the form.

Either contact your local community social services (especially if you have any help from them already) or get in touch with Citizens Advice either by phone or in person and I'm sure they'll be able to advise you as to who could help you with forms, medicals and so forth.

It sounds like you need someone supportive with you who can ask questions on your behalf or perhaps give you gentle reminders as to what to ask. If it helps you, try to write down main points that you'd like the doctors to know and take your list with you. If you find you cannot get your words out ask the doctor to look at the list and go through each point with you. I know doctors don't mind these lists as it helps them to help you.

Whenever I saw a new doctor for my son I always made sure I wrote things down just in case I forgot to ask certain questions and I found that just by being aware I had my list that I remembered all the things I'd written down on it.

The doctor might post the forms back to you to sign or he might request you visit his office to sign them although I'm sure he'd sooner have them sent to you. Perhaps give his office a ring and tell them you forgot to sign your form and see what they suggest.

    Good luck.

The atos doctor makes his report and sends it back to the dla DM ,who then uses that and all the other information he has,i.e. the application itself, reports from gp and maybe consultants etc to make a decision on your claim. As far as the hip replacement goes i`m not sure thats relevant as you are having it replaced.
I`ve read of many people who didnt think the atos doctors visit went too well who went on to get dla,as for the signature if its that important I suspect they will post a copy for you to sign.
    Good luck
