will British Gas charge me for changing?

A few weeks ago i got one of the british gas saleswomen on my doorstep offering me a package for gas and electric.
I was told that british gas were dropping there gas and electric by 20% in march and that they would also add a tracker of 12% meaning i would pay 12% less than the tarrif.
I signed up only to see that the tracker is 6% on each not 12 and of course it turns out that they have only dropped 10% off one not sure if gas or electric, this was announced after my cool off period.
It also turns out that if i want to come out before december they will charge me think 20 or 30 each for gas and electric.
The company i am with now (as i haven't gone over yet) have asked me to stay and said that i wouldn't have to pay to come out as i have been miss sold it.
So not sure what to do now as i really don't want to pay to come out of british gas. Could they force me to pay to leave or could i argue i was miss sold it?

That would depend, were you speaking to the sales department or the Erroneous Transfers departmentat your old supplier?
  • british gas happily signed me up to this tonight without mentioning the £30 per fuel cancellation charge. they knew full well from previous conversations that i was not planning on staying with them for various reasons.
luckily i noticed on the internet and phoned back to cancel it straight away otherwise it would have been my word against theirs. (their phrase from earlier).
so if this charge was not mentioned to you, then yes you were missold. personally i don't think it matters whether it was in the terms and conditions if it wasn't mentioned verbally on the doorstep. i may be wrong though.
also the discounts they mention are confusing and inconsistent. i couldn't tell much difference between the unit prices of click 5 that i am on at present.
phone british gas and stand your ground.

One would hope you've learned by now not to listen to any sales talk, but to get everything in writing.

When you signed up to BG you would have received a contract detailing their terms & conditions. You would also have been given a cooiling off period should, after having had time to read the terms & conditions at your own leasure, decide the deal was not for you.

If the company you are with presently are so adament that you won't face any exit charges from BG, get them to put in writing that any exit charges you do receive from BG they will credit you with.

Best of luck ... but don't hold your breath.
