Is this right?

Hi All, I hope someone can help as I really dont know what to do:confused:

My latest British Gas bill has come, and basically I am owing £30 for 6 hours of heating just for 1 a week!
I am paying them a Direct Debit of £40 a month as the guy said this was average when I set up the account - so clearly I am getting very behind already!

We have it on 5 hours in the evening and 1 hour in the morning, this is for the heating and does the water too (in the tank in the bathroom)

The house is 3 bed detached and I have 6 radiators on for this time.

So please tell me is this normal? I don't understand how its so high as I have only ever had oil central heating - which wasn't this much!

I don't want to sound like the sob story but I am due a baby in 4 weeks, the house ain't that warm now with 6 hours use, and I am so worried the baby will freeze.

Thanks for any replies
Lisa

I worked out my gas bill today, due next week.

I have a 3 bed - detached - 7 rads ( upstairs rads on thermostatic valves, on 3) running off a condensing boiler. With the heating on roughly 4- 5hrs a day with the thermostat on 20c, no higher.

For 80 days, Ive used £250 worth of gas, before online discount. So for the winter quarter just over 3 quid a day. Trust me, Im ultra careful after a huge rise in my D/D payments last year. I pay £64 a month on gas, I was in arrears so I had to cover this shortfall.

Personally, I would say £40 a month is a little on the low side for your kind of house. Although many factors will determine how high your bill will be, from how efficient your boiler is, to double glazing, loft and cavity wall insulation.

£120 does not sound expensive for electricity for three bedrooms for four weeks for a freezing winter month.
