microwave advice

Does anyone know what the piece of cardboard covering the hole at the side (inside) of my microwave is for?

And does it matter if it is not there?

And if i need it there - I expect a replacement will be expensive, so can I make one?

  • Sounds like the wave guard I think. Silvery cardlike thing? Prob available direct from manufacturer. I had a Sharp one replaced. The appliance guy was in to look at the dishwasher. He had a sheet of stuff with him that he cut to size. I think it just helps direct the waves to even cooking but not 100% sure.

    Hello ZIZI

I'm puzzled about your query so perhaps you could give us a bit more information:

1 Is your microwave oven brand new?
2 Could it be packaging material which hasn't been removed?
3 If the answer to question 1 is no, have you been using the oven with the
    cardboard in place?
4 Do you still have the manufacturers handbook for the appliance?

We have some expert contributors to this board. I'm sure someone will post a helpful response soon.

    Kind Regards

I think it is made of material that is transparent for microwaves. Its only purpose is to protect the hole (where microwaves come from) from dirt/grease. Generally any plactic or fiberglass plastic is transparent for microwaves.

I think you might mean a wave guide cover. I bought one for my Sharp from http://www.partmaster.co.uk/cgi-bin/search.pl?query=Sharp%20R82STM%20&pg=2 because the instruction book stated that it is necessary for it to be there and undamaged. I cannot tell you why though!! The total price is less than £10 incl and they are a doddle to fit. I just wish that the bulb was as easy to fit.

this is for my old microwave, not mega old but I have had a new one, it has lived in the garage for a while but now someone wants it. I've cleaned it so it looks like new ( if you squint a bit). It used to have a cardboard shiny sort of looking thing covering a hole inside, which I vaguely remember cleaning, but somehow it distintegrated during the cleaning process.

Anyway many thanks for everyone's help - I will phone the manufacturer's and see how much it costs, but i just wondered if anything readily to hand would work OK
  • I just managed to buy one off ebay for 7.50, then i have to cut it to size myself. I had no luck with Hinari, the microwave maker.
