Severe Disability

Hi,

My wife received a severe disability payment each month of approx. £70, and has a car through Motability.

The question I want to know is that because I am perceived to earn a decent salary we don't seem to get any other concessions, ie. her dental, prescriptions, council tax etc.

This may well be correct, but I just wondered whether we were innocently missing any entitlements that we are able to claim given the situation. Obviously I don't mind paying and looking after her, she is my wife after all but it seems that because I earn a resonable salary I have to pay for all of these, and still pay a full council tax despite only one adult being able to work.

  • Hi

I'm in the same position as you i'm on IB and DLA, HRM and LRC my partner works full time and looks after me. He does most of the housework and the cooking.

We are not entilled to any help with council tax, prescriptions ( I take 27 tablets a day plus oramorph when needed) no CWP even though I am at home all day and feel the cold. My partner can not get carers allowance as he works too many hours even though he looks after me.

Yes I get angry and fed up but hey thats life for you!!!

I wish you all the best.

I too am in that same situation. OH has a good job too and although he is my carer at other times we are not entitled to anything other than DLA  (I cant claim IB etc as work a few hrs a week from home and my pay is too high!)

I know what you mean though - does feel like you are sometimes paddling with a spoon! It took us a while before we accepted that we weren't entitled to any other help as all drs/family/friends etc kept saying we would be.

Think we just have to accept that that is the way the system works.

  • Hi - does your wife use a wheelchair in the house. In England (sorry, dont know about rest of UK), she is entitled to a band reduction. Contact your council. They will send a form, do a personal visit, and decide then. If she uses a wheelchair to get around it should be straightforward, and may even be backdated to when she got the wheelchair.
Apart from that, there is no reduction.
  • You need more than a wheelchair to have a band reduction, you need to have a bathroom/toilet for the disabled person for their use too.

I`m sure its not that simple, and i`m totally convinced that it wouldnt be back-dated more than 3 months even if it was that simple
  • Hi - yes to the last 2 posters - it was that simple - precisely what we did.I was told by the council that they had even backdated one claim by 6 years. Contact your council and they will send you a form
