How to clean car seats?

Does anyone know a good way to clean cloth car seats? Tried and tested methods would be appreciated.

If you have access to a vax or other similar carpet shampooer with upholstery attachments, that's by far the best method IMO.

If not, I'd use a mild soap (ie ordinary bar of soap) or a weak solution of say bicarb and warm water and rub the upholstery with that. Use a nail brush for stubborn marks. Then use clean dry towels and soak any moisture up (you may want to sit on the towels (put a placcy bag on top first) to get more water out)

I'm sure if you check through the cleaning index (blue bar at the top of the thread), there'll be some helpful hints, esp concerning what solutions to make up.

  • Thanks Ticklemouse, I've had a look on the cleaning thread and cannot find anything that would help. Will keep looking....unless anyone has any other ideas????

It depends on how dirty they are.
I bought a second hand car that had very dirty seats.
I unbolted them from the runners on during a nice spell of weather in the summer and used a carpet cleaner solution and a power washer on them.
Took a while to dry but it worked.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • Hot soapy water (washing up liquid) put on with a sponge leave a couple of minutes, go over with a farly stiff brush, then use a wash & vac to suck up as much water as you can, that makes them come up really nice but the seat will be wet for a couple of days !

If it's only individual stains, I've found baby wipes remove most things including pen, oil and melted in sweets.

for cloth seats ive been using hot water and stardrops on a cloth or sponge

again with the leather you could wipe over with the same solution
