N Power tariff

In october 2008 ran a dual fuel check on comparison site, was with N power SOL 12 tarrif. The comp site came up with best tariff asN-P SOL 13 (changed tariff).
11th feb 2009 ran same check N Power came up as the cheapest tariff but it was SOL14 saving me £120. At no time had they informed their coustomers that a cheaper tariff had been introduced. Changed over to new tariff easily with a phone call saving a considerable amount of money. Asked why they had not informed their coustomers was informed that they were not allowed to. This is a scam if we did not have comparison sites and internert we would be paying WELL OVER THE ODDS.

    Hi robcat,

When suppliers bring out new tariffs, they can benefit customers and save them money.

Generally they don't contact customers to advise of new tariffs, as this doesn't always save everyone money.

The best thing to do is to be looking at new tariffs from your supplier, maybe on their website and you can always ask them to do comparisons for you if you see one you like the look of.

Or look on comparison websites to check all tariffs out and see what's best for you.

  • Or, coming from a non-energy industry employee (i.e. me), the REAL reason the energy companies keep superceding their online tariffs (and leave their loyal customers on the existing, now more expensive, tariff) is a cynical attempt to get to the top of the switching sites! You, as a loyal customer, unless you kick up a fuss, are effectively funding their foray into acqiring more customers through the comparison sites on the new, cheap tariff (that they don't want you to know about). These newly-acquired customers will then, of course, become like you in a few months time, funding the company's expansion plans by paying too much for their fuel once the tariff they signed up to is superceded with a cheaper tariff. And on and on it goes. Seriously, is this really the way essential service should be sold?

  • Robcat I too had a smiliar problem, after being totally shocked by my winter quarter I rang Npower up and after I had said I would be looking elsewhere the lad said 'you have just said the magic words', so he could now look for me a cheaper tariff and SOL 14 came up - he said I would have saved £80 if on this instead of the SOL 11. He said he could only offer me this because I had threatened to move supplier. When I rang to ask them why they do not advice customers about better tariffs I was told 'it is up to the customer to be proactive not us'. I have had nothinbg but bad service from Npower but will have to stay till July to qualify for their 12 month discount. Then I will be 'proactive' and find another supplier.
