Need some help, auxiillary drive belt has slipped of car
Options
HI everyone i am hoping someone can help me here and am very grateful for any suggestions,
basically....
My father had his car fixed in November of last year, This was to replace auxillary drive belt as it had started to shred, cam belt as it was about due so had it done as engine was already stripped down and a new water pump, was told this may have caused the shredding of the Auxillary drive belt.
Last friday having driven for 50 miles or so he noticed his car had started knocking.
It turns out now (its in the garage) this Auxillary drive belt has slipped off in tact and wrapped itself around the cam belt, its apparently going to be very costly to fix.....
So my question....This belt was fitted less than 3 months ago, why would it just slip off? What can cause this?
I want to go to the garage in the morning and i need to be armed with something as i know nothing about cars apart form service them regular and put petrol in etc.... I am wondering if the tension was not set right but not sure enough to stand my ground with it
Thanks for reading x

You can touch the dust but please don't write in it !
Would you like to speak to the man in charge, or the woman who knows whats happening?

it could have been adjusted incorrectly, or the adjuster mechanism not locked up properly. or the pulleys that the belt runs on could have been out of line,or even a bracket attatched to the alternator could have a fracture and be causing it to move.
also something else, and possibly what the garage will say, something from the road has come into the engine bay and caused this, ie a branch, some wood, metal bar, even might try to blame the snow?
my guess would be incorrect adjustment of belt....work permit granted!0 -
Thankyou so much for your information, i was thinking it was something to do with the tension but as i know very little about cars i did not want to try and stand my ground.
My father is very stressed out by this and i think i may have to be the one to deal with it. Its not like he is rolling in cash so need to try and get this sorted.
The car has a warranty on it that my father paid for so will have to see but they are now saying the belts don't come under warranty although in november they did?
I assume the warranty does not cover as it would be a wear and tear issue?
If so, no wear and tear could have happened in 3 months, you see where i am going with this, i am losing myself i am so tired.:o
Will go to bed and have a look at this with fresh eyes tomorrow
Thanks again goldspanners xYou can touch the dust but please don't write in it !

there shouldnt be any wear and tear in 3 months, well none of any significance, unless something had bee incorrectly fitted.
i dont think you should be claiming on any car warranty for this, you should be getting the garage who fitted the belts and pump to carry out any repairs FOC....work permit granted!0 -
Yup i think thats what i was meaning have no idea why i even mentined the warranty, when i got in bed i was thinking whats the warranty got to do with the garage doing a job wrong???:o :rotfl:
But thanks again i will try and sort this out today. You can touch the dust but please don't write in it !

Sorry, dont understand how an auxillary belt can "Wrap itself round the Cam belt" isnt the cam belt enclosed?0

I had been told this yesterday, but am not sure about this and think i need to look into this further, wondering if my father is being ripped of now.
I am trying to find the number to contact Renault direct so i can ask them this question.
It would seem strange to not have this belt enclosed as it can cause so much damage. You can touch the dust but please don't write in it !

the auxiliary belt will be running of one of the pulleys that the timing belt is also running off, the belt covers are plastic, they can break or be worn through very quickly if said belt has been rubbing of it, or it could have been pulled through a gap in the timing belt cover where the crankshaft pulley for the auxiliary belt comes through?
ive seen plenty of things get pulled through timing belt covers right into the sump!...work permit granted!0
