Walnut Panel - Just where do I get one?

So we have got a new bed which turns out to be a lot higher than we thought so I have to rethink the plan for a headboard.
So I would like to get a nice piece of walnut or some other dark wood and fix this to the well at the end of the bed. Sounds simple except I have not got a clue where to start (and Google is not helping).
Seeing that I am wanting a piece of walnut (veneer would do the job fine) approx 5' x 5' x 0.5" that is finished around the edges, just where does one go for stuff like this?
Is it as easy as my local timber yard or do I need a specialist supplier (in which case where do I find one)?
Any clues welcome
Thanks

bear in mind that veneers usually come in fairly small strips (ie 18 inches wide). so you will have to piece them up. and they are costly, esp the best quality ones.
maybe better, certainly cheaper, to find an old walnut wardrobe and use that? peeps throw them out regular!Get some gorm.0 -
I was thinking of an actual piece of wood rather than just a veneer on this because as you say, I would end up with a jigsaw.
Thanks0 -
Maybe talk to a kitchen worktop specialist: your requirements are basically the same as a 5ft square kitchen island worktop...
Note you may not need 5ft- do you really intend your headboard to be 5ft higher than the bed??! If not, then a standard kitchen worktop size would fit.0 -
Have a look in Magnets catalogue.....????
Probably an end panel is what you need0 -

An end panel will only be 60 cms deep though won't it.
OP huge oversized headboards are really trendy now & look fab.
I have just bought a super king bed (6 ft) & I plan on making a 6 x 3 one.
My thoughts exactly. If I can get the wood panel then sticking it to the wall should be dead easy. it's just finding the material.0 -

It sounds a bit dodgy having a well at the end of the bed. Could be a bit risky if you have to get up in the night.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -

I made an upholstered one for my last (king sized bed).
A plank of wood, 5 x 4 foot, foam & a nice piece of plain raspberry heavy linen.
You can buy little brackets to fix it to the wall from the back.
With my new bed, I plan to make two, each one 3 x 3 & bracket them together as DH loves that two headboard look.0 -

you would never find a piece of real walnut wood that size. even if you could, it would cost a kings ransom.
a veneered job is the next cheapest. then followed by a laminate type top, walnut finish. (which is plastic).Get some gorm.0 -

Sorry.
i meant a piece of board with the veneer already on it rather than having to buy wood then buy veneer and then try and make it all match up.0
