Meter in an unsafe position.

Hello

Bit of advice sought if poss.

Our gas meter is installed in our cellar (1902 terrace) upon a wooden shelf. The wooden shelf appears to be original along with a few others in the cellar. One end of the shelf is embedded in the brickwork, the other is held up by a bracket, also of wood, also embedded in the brickwork.

Problem is this, the shelf appears to be going very rotten, and certainly wobbles.

Now, one day it is likely that shelf will give way and the gas meter will fall to the floor, possibly an explosion or at least a leak.

If the meter belongs to them, and was installed by them (whoever 'them' is), should they move it to a safely installed position without charge?

Why should I have to pay for them installing a dangerous piece of kit, unsecured on a wooden shelf?

Thanks for any advice on where I stand.

Regards

Mark

I had a similar problem years ago. Our gas meter was in the hallway next to sitting room at eye level height. It was not on a shelf just a long old thick pipe. It waggled back and fro. We asked BG to move it and was told it would cost us £80 (going back 18 years). We refused so it was to stay put. Then we were advised to ask them to check for a gas leak from the pipe as it might have been damaged over the years. They came with their detecter and found the pipe to be perfectly safe. We maintained however we could smell gas so they did a full check. They found a huge gas leak in our front garden. Were there all night digging up the garden, pavement & road. When the reconnected us they said they would have to put a new meter in outside our house as was current policy. Shame. Cost £0:rolleyes:
