Registered owner for car insurance.

I have an old car, for which I am the registered owner.

My son has been on the insurance whilst learning to drive.

He has now passed his test, so we need to get him insurance in his own right, as he will be the main driver.

Should I transfer ownership of the vehicle to him?

Many thanks.

Not necessary. And will add another keeper onto its history.

Just inform insurer that he has a full licence and is the main driver. (And sit down before they tell you the "adjustment" this makes to the premium.)

Alternatively, if you do change ownership that will allow him to insure it himself and start earning ncd in his own right. (Though you do need to weigh up the effect of giving up any ncb currently being used via your policy).
  • As your son will be the main driver, I think Im right in saying that most insurance companies would want the policy holder (and therefore main driver) to be the registered keeper/owner of the vehice. This would be best in any case, because if your son (As main driver, but not policy holder) were to have an accident (God forbid), then you'll probably find the insurance company very unwilling to play ball.

If youre not fussed whether its on your name or his, probably best to play safe and transfer it over to him.

Alternatively to that of course. If you are looking to get insurance for him on his own, purely to get him some NCB then have you considered the bigger insurance companies (I believe Directline is at least one of them) that will give even named drivers there own NCB, which they can use if they decide to get their own insurance elsewhere later on. Just a thought.

    This is incorrect advice.

    1) The policy holder does not have to be the main driver.

    2) It is scaremongering (and quite wrong) to say an insurer would say the insurance would be void if a claim was made when the car was being driven by a named main driver.

I agree with you Quentin and would also point out if his son is the main user he should advise the Insurer of this and if his son drives to and from work or college that he also advises the Insurer of this.

Depends whether the insurer you are looking to place your business with will cover a risk where the policyholder is not the registered owner of the vehicle.
  • Also bear in mind that the registered keeper's name needs to appear on the insurance certificate for when you come to purchase the car tax, either as a named driver or stated as the registered keeper

  • also might find that even though the insurer is happy to give you a policy where the main user is different to the registered owner, the price is probably going to be more

so if it's a high premium (likely to be i guess), then maybe worth changing it just for this saving
  • thats crap. my 1st car insured in my name was my mums old car in her name. never any hassle for taxing with my documents, never had tos ay that it was her car legaly. she owned it and gave me free use of it under the assumpotion i keept it running.

to TAX a car you have to have insurance docs and a valid MOT. hell i cohabit (2 addys) and my car is regestered in one and i normaly am re taxing in another place and they dont even bat an eylid just take the cash and give me the certificate

I thought that NCB earnt in this way will only be recognised by the co you earnt it with.
ie you earn it with Direct Line but Churchill won't accept it.
