Don't forget if you're in a semi or terraced property and work is involved to the party wall then you will need to comply with the Party Wall etc Act 1996.0

this can be avoided if the architect drawing up the plans is told in advance....... we had to change our plans as we dont get on with next door neighbours - as you have to put it in writing to them, and in our case if they didnt respond it was the same as then responding and saying no they didnt agree...... so architect changed plans.... therefore no need to affect the party wall at all
at the end of the day a decent architect is worth their pricesmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

I find the whole loft conversion process confusing, the company we used sent us a video explaining the whole process:
youtube.com/watch?v=Kd-Ox6TRy-g
we asked to see plans all the way though the process (great pece of mind) and the sales person that dealt with us had been a qualified architect before becoming sales manager, as you say robnye "decent architect is worth their price"!!!0
