Most of these bills seem way over the top. Just to put it in context, I live in a two bedroom house and my gas+leccy comes to about £45 a month (Scottish Power) and I spend a lot of time working from home, so probably use more power during the day when most people are out at work

If you know the tariff you are on and the unit charges you maybe able to calculate your bill, but remember the unit charge on the bill is not directly related to the units on the meter, electric is normally on KwH (Kilo Watt Hour).

as far as I am aware the units shown on the meter are kilowatt hours.

the cost calculation is therefor very simple......

meter reading at end of period - meter reading at start of period = units used

cost = (standing charge per day (if any) x no. of days + no. of units x unit price) x 1.05

(VAT is added and is 5%)

if you have a tariff where the first so many units are at a higher price then these need to be apportioned according to the number of days the period covers,

if you have units at 2 different prices ( e.g. day and night) then you have to do 2 calculations and add them together.
  • Ah that is great, thank you all for your help. Me and my partner are still very worried. We have been measuring the meter very closely. Yesterday we were not at home... had the TV on in the night time with the heating only on low for a couple of hours just to take the chill off. We measured the previous day at the same time 9pm and measured again last night at 9pm... We had used 87 units / kwhs, WE ARE NOT THERE! Just seems very odd, anyone using even close to this? Please help!

Turn everything in your place off. Does the meter still go round?

You need to get it checked out./
  • I have turned it off at the circuit board / the main switch and it didnt seem to move... however we did not montior this for a long period, it is digital how long should i stayed glue to it for?

Is the meter broken? Surely a one bedroom flat would never use this amount !??

    Ring your provider -
What would worry me is you're paying for someone elses's elecy - which is presumably a huge concern for you too.

What sort of heating is it?

87 units in a day sounds very high, BUT turning off the main meter will bring it to a stop that just proves the meter switch works.

What you need to find out is if nothing is plugged in does the meter still go round?

Remember to unplug alarm clocks, mobile chargers etc. Ensure all the socket switches are in the off position and then check the meter is it turning or not?

Ring your electric company and tell them the useage for a day they should be able to help.
  • Yes that is my worry, big time. We have only been living there a week, we rent etc. I have contacted the landlord and he said this is not right, the bill should not be that high no way. The heating is electric but it is hardly on!!!

    Any ideas?

What sort of heater is it? Storage heaters? Go find a model number on them and find out what they use.
