How do I find my telephone line provider?

Please can members of this forum assist me? I have just rented a new property and the telephone line is connected but I do not know who the provider is. I have dialled 150 but it just goes dead. I have asked the estate agent to check with the landlord, but they are abroad and currently uncontactable and I need to get the line sorted and connected to broadband as soon as possible as I work from home and will be moving in this weekend.

I don't really mind who I go with and actually my rental agreement prevents me from changing the line provider without agreement anyway, I just need to find who the provider is and get them cracking on setting up the broadband.

Can anyone give me any hep?

You say the line is connected (I take it that means there is what appears to be a dial tone when you pick up the handset). However, the 'goes dead' bit when you dial 150 suggests the line may be stopped (still connected but incoming and outgoing calls barred).

Try dialling 17070. If it's a BT line, you should hear the 'circuit number' announcement. Then you can try contacting BT quoting that number to see if they will connect.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I know there is an active telephoneline at my property as I checked this with BT, although they are not able to tell me who the provider is (it is not with them).
How can I find out who the telephoneprovider is and what the old telephonenumber was, as I do not want to have to install a new line (as this is what I have to do if I want to join Sky if I do not know the old telephonenumber).
I can not get hold of the previous tenant who lived there.
    How can I do this?
    Thank You!

Same question as post #2 - what do you mean by 'active'?

If you mean there's a dial tone and you can make calls, try calling your mobile - the CLI will show on your mobile.

If there's a dial tone but you cannot make calls, try dialling 17070 to get the circuit number (the allocated phone number).

Also try dialling 150 and see which company answers.

If there's no dial tone, you're pretty much snookered.

  • Just a suggestion, why dont you get yourself a PAYG mobile dongle until you can get hold of the landlord
