Plastering job - Chelmsford, Essex

Hi all,

Last night my hallway 'Lath and Plaster' (sp?) ceiling collapsed, leaving the wooden slats underneath completely exposed. I assume that the whole hallway ceiling will therefore need replastering - it's about 3 or 4msq. Does anyone have a rough idea of how much i should expect to pay to get the job done?

Also, don't suppose there are any friendly plasterers in Chelmsford reading this post? If anyone could recommend a friend i'd be grateful!

Thanks!

Gill

the whole ceiling does not nessesary need replaceing, however i would recommend you do, simplest way if your half decent at DIY is remove plaster & lath then re-sheet it with 12mm plaster board tape and fill or skim, plasterboard is around £5 a sheet 8'x4' ,finishing plaster around £4.50 a bag, screws around £6 for 700 50mm long, tape £3 ish, filler £11 bag ( although you wont need filler if your skimming ), i'm a bit far away or i would volounteer, prob cost you round £150-£200 labour, only a days work if your skimming, day and half if filling and sanding

Thanks Kev. I'm no DIY expert, sadly. Thanks for your reply though! Would we just literally cut the plasteroard to size, then nail to the wooden slats above?

na na lass remove plaster and lath, screw DONT nail new plasterboard to existing joists this will prevent any mpvement and stop the dreaded nail hole circles appearing thru new plaster. you dont need to be an expert but you will need help, i'd seriously replace whole ceiling cos when you start to cut thru plaster and lath this will loosen the existing plaster and you could well be back to square one, the amount of time/mess to repair you would greatly benifit in replacement
