Cheap holiday in May in the Lakes??

Hi
We have gone every year to the Lakes in May(before my money saving days!!) and really given no thought to the expense!!
Now I am money saving I was wondering if anyone could give me any ideas of where to stay that is CHEAP(not sure if cheap places exist in the Lake District LOL).It would be for 2 adults and a dog!(really want self catering)
