The difference is probably minimal though. As extreme alternatives, I'm sure i read somewhere that a car is more economical when its just been washed (as opposed to covered in dirt) as it cuts a smoother hole in the air. Also, when the mirrors are folded in ... not very safe though!

The often forgotten fuel saving, is easy to do - finances allowing, of course, is to fill the tank, fully. Then run down, 'till the low fuel light comes on, then fill up,to max, again.

As so many petrol stations require a journey, 'cos they are so few, these days, you won't waste fuel & time & effort, going to fill up.

  • Found some quite usual points on the RAC website.

    http://www.rac.co.uk/carcare/advice/general_help/responsible_driving

    One of which is:
Drive off as soon as you can

Don't leave your engine running when you first start up. Drive off straight away if you can but drive gently until the engine has reached its normal operating temperature.

Your engine will warm up quicker, clear your glass quicker and add miles to the gallon. Engines take longer to warm up when just idling without being under load.
Obviously dont race your engine, or put it under to much strain in the warm up stage as the oil will not be performing or reaching parts as it should.

  • my favourite approach to fuel economy is to walk or cycle if I can...managed to get my mileage down to 2800 odd for the year that way.

    :)

  • Is that 2800 miles to the gallon?:p

  • lol that would be a miracle!!!

  • Here is one I wouldn't like trying:

Half fill your tank with sand, salt will do but the effects dont last as long.
Now each fill up should cost half as much.

Please dont try this at home. (its a joke).

What would be the effects of watering down your fuel? say put 5 litres of water in a tank of 50 litres fuel.
Not good I guess, silly question I suppose, any ideas?

  • Is it true that 56MPH is the most efficient speed to travel at? I remember hearing this as a kid but I dunno how correct it is?

Apparently so, I did read a post recently where a very clever user gave a very detailed and scientific explanation as to why this is.

Basically it is a compromise between engine torque, road drag, aerodynamics, and other friction factors within the engine.
