I agree, but the only thing reportable is using work time to sell shares, which is totally unprovable.
Also we are entitled (legally) to breaks, but we never take them because it's too busy. So he could claim that this time spent is a break time. It's just that he is screwing over the rest of us as we have to pick up the slack.
Immoral, but nothing actually against the rules.
if you were available for the extra shifts and wanted them and he had said that you werent available then you can report him, i would do that in writing. there is nothing wrong in doing extra shifts, but it is wrong saying someone else isnt available to do them so that he can corner it.

i doubt whether complaining about his share dealing will hold water if he was doing his work and doing the share dealing during breaks or lull times at work. loads of people have iphones etc with internet access, people who want to do trading will be doing that in their free time i guess. loads use computers etc for surfing, depends on what speciality they are in, for eg when on call for emergencies in some specialities on some days there might not be any work to do because there were no emergencies in your speciality, so you might be sitting on your backside all through the shift (not everyone is lucky to have oncall rooms), sometimes there might not be enough chairs for all to sit on, so people stuck like that just use the net to while away the time. using internet for personal browsing is allowed by nhs trusts (with appropriate filters set up by IT depts). i doubt if anyone can get away with slack at work for a long time, sooner or later they get caught hopefully.

as for not allowing internet for personal browsing during free time, if that happens then the consultants and loads of others would be the first to scream in protest :)

Please tell me where to get a job in one of these specialities!!!!
Actually sitting down for 1 minute would be nice ;) (at least for junior doctors)
On call rooms are a thing of the past anyway, "on call" is a misnomer, it's busier than not being on call.

i didnt say its always quiet, just that it can sometimes be quiet in many specialities. psychiatry do on calls from home so can be quiet. if during the night there are no deliveries needing your input (like some days) it can be quiet on OBS. same goes for surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, anaesthesia, dermatology etc. guess in the long run busy days and less busy ones equalise.

i know what you mean about it being good to be able to sit down, better still is being able to pee after 9h which you cant if you are stuck in theatre with a 9h long case without any breaks. nothing can beat being able to go to the loo after such a case not even sitting down on a busy day. :)

You are talking about consultants! I don't know any junior doctors or registrars for that matter that do non-resident on calls! Even psych juniors.
Obs and Gynae is actually one of the few consultant specialities where they are pretty much always called out, so I disagree with you on that one.
I'm currently doing surgery and haven't had a single non-busy day so far, let alone one where nothing happens!

If nurses stopped bleeping me for "urgent" night sedation my day might be a little quieter! NB to any nurses reading this.... I wil NOT prescribe sleeping tablets to elderly confused people on warfarin with a falls history! So don't ask!:p

    Is Fred the Shred greedy?

Or is he entitled to whatever he can screw out of the system?

Should we as a society promote sociopaths to the commanding heights of the economy? There is such distaste in business for concepts of humanity, treating people decently, and running businesses on a steady basis rather than the dash for growth (which if you don't take part in, you will likely be trampled over).

Instead of giving bankers bonuses as incentives how about they lose their jobs if they do not perform to an expected level as anyone else would? It is pretty simple. You have a level of expectation of the quality of your work in any role. If you do not meet those expectations then you are under performing. If you are under performing you are in danger of losing your job. If you are over performing then you should keep your job. Okay it may be suggested that this would breed an attitude of low expectation and therefore minimal effort but it would certainly keep all this greed we have been seeing recently at bay. Surely these bankers get paid enough to have massive job satisfaction without needing massive bonuses to inspire them?!?! I am on the UK average wage and that inspires me enough to get out of my bed and do my best every day. I still don't get what is so special about these bankers? Other than the size of their egos.

It is all fine and well paying someone a bonus to get them to make as much money as possible for the shareholders in companies that do not have such dire consequences if they go bust. When it is done in a raft of businesses that command so much control over the fate of the UKs finances then the promotion of greed over prudent practice can be incredibly risky.

I don't believe financial success and greed are necessarily bedfellows, nor are they mutually exclusive.

And let's be honest, how many of us are completely altruistic???
Poor and content is rich enough!

Its not a question of how much you get - its how you've got it and what you do with it. If you get it in a moral way and then sit down to think whether what you earn constitutes a high income - and, if it does, you give the surplus away to good causes then it doesnt matter HOW high your income is - you wont be a greedy person.
