Birmingham to Watford by train

My understanding is that you cannot "travel short" of your ticket, but you can buy tickets for various stages of your journey provided that your train does stop at those stations.0

Post #2 is right so far as the very cheapest tickets are concerned (there are some tickets that do allow you to travel short).
My preferred solution would be to buy a ticket to Watford from somewhere nearby, and use this to pass the barrier.0 -
Investigate cheaper Watford tickets first, especially if you're not going to be in a huge hurry. London Midland has tickets at a huge discount compared to Virgin, and while it's a longer journey it's not too bad.
They're quite hard to find though, so you'll have to be clever. use the nxec booking site, and when you've got the fare info click on 'slower trains' in the bottom left-hand corner, then tick the 'London Midland only' boxes. Fares start at £5 advance single; £21 off-peak (walk-on) return, and they're from Watford itself so there won't be an issue with barriers or staff.0 -
MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.:hello:0 -
I need to do this journey by train in a couple of weeks. It is cheaper for me to get tickets to euston and just get off one stop earlier. Will there be an issue using my ticket in the barriers at Watford?
The cheaper tickets to Euston are presumably 'advance' (otherwise they wouldn't be cheaper) - you cannot get off at Watford using these. If you have an 'anytime' or 'off-peak' ticket to Euston then you can get off at Watford.0 -
