curried egg rosti
grate one raw potato per peson squeeze excess moisture out in a tea towel and mix with a tablespoonful of curry powder.
heat a fring pan with some oil and a knob of butter (optional) and spread the grated potato out into a cake. fry gently for 7 minutes then flip tehw whole thing - it helps to use a baking sheet for this then slide it back into the pan. make holes in the cake - one per person and break an egg into each hole. either finish cooking on the stove top or put the frying pan in a moderate oven for five minutes until the eggs are set.
Very quick, very easy, very tasty and very cheap!!It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
If I was incredibly broke, I would get a loaf of Sainsburys ('cos that's where I shop) economy bread for 27p, a tub of their economy spread for 24p, and six packets of their 8p chicken curry flavour noodles. 99p the lot! Feeds one person six times or six people one time.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Lidl are doing leeks for 59p/ kg. If you had these and some potatoes and eggs - there is leek & potato soup for lunch and Anglesey eggs for dinner - halved hardboiled eggs in a cheese sauce (or white sauce with mustard) topped with mashed potato which has been mixed with steamed leeks. Pop in the oven for 30 mins to heat through like shepherds pie“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

Corned Beef Hash:
1 can corned beef
1 Onion
1 Carrot
2 Oxo cubes
Cornflour (if needed)
Water
boil sliced carrots and chopped onion in approx 1 & 1/2 pints water for 5 mins then add cubed can of corned beef - turning down the heat to a simmer for approx 10 mins. Add two oxo cubes and cornflour if needed to thicken up. A dash of soy sauce is nice too - I add it instead of salt. Serve with veg and mash! I used to have this in my student days and im actually craving it right now...

P.S. Anyone know how much a packet of ham costs at Aldi, Lidl or Nettos?
Rather than buying ham, what about a cheap piece of gammon to cook & slice. I got a piece in the local butcher for £2.99 which will provide a meal & some sandwiches. (2 days worth)
Another thing I have done is bought a ham bone from the deli counter (not lidl or aldi of course!) which they sometimes sell quite cheaply, presumably for soup. They are from the posh sort of ham & usually have quite a lot left on, certainly enough to justify the cost and then some. It's just not in nice neat slices!
Most supermarket delis sell off little packets of sliced "ends" of ham & other cooked meat quite cheaply, too.0 -

Oi Oi Oi...
enough of this bloke knocking, I'll have you know that it is I that has to keep the wife away from supermarkets, because if I don't it's a case of
'cor, that looks nice'
'We could have some of those'
'mmm chocolate!'
Not only that, a 20 minute whizz in and out can take up to 2 hours! :rotfl:0 -
OK so maybe its not always the blokes- just the OH!
I agree the pineapple chunks screamed sweet and sour to me too! Here's two more ideas for cheapo stuff
Pasta with HM tomato sauce: Soften 1 onion and 1 chopped clove of garlic, add one tin of chopped tomatoes (not often I buy these but here they do make a difference - honest) leave to reduce down whilst the pasta is cooking. Can ring the changes by adding curry powder/chilli/leftovers from Sunday that aren't really enough but you can't bear to throw away. Serve on its own or with garlic bread to pad it out a bit more.
Leek and bacon pie:Get a pack of cheap bacon bits and fry with a couple of sliced leeks, mix in a little cheese sauce and top with mashed potato.0 -
I think OH should give you some more money! Sell some of his stuff on ebay. Mind you, I would not struggle on the amount you have left but it is a bit of a culture shock if you are not used to it.
I write a shopping list and then go through it and see what I can do without til the next grocery money day. Until the end of the week I am going to break dishwasher tablets in half and use half at a time, I have enough veg to last the week, I wrote other things on my list which were really non urgent, so all I need for the rest of the week is fruit and milk.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Mixed veg supper- fry onion, courgette [or other spare veg] and pepper. Add herbs & mix with tin of toms. Transfer into oven proof dish. Make 4 wells into the mixture & break eggs into wells. Season. Top with cheese and bake 30-40 mins at 180
Serve with bread etc
