Hi Pandora
I'm not a kitchen designer / builder / tradesperson in any way! just a mum with currently 3 teenagers and 3 under 10s in the house at the mo and just wanted to say don't necessarily rule out solid wood!
we had iroko worktops and upstand fitted 3 years ago and they are hardwearing and beautiful. they add warmth and finish to what was not an expensive fitted kitchen and i anticipate them lasting for many many more years.
I agree i've just had iroko worktops fitted aswell, i'm really pleased they look beautiful...0 -
Another vote for Iroko worktops

Corian is a LOT less expensive than granite. A group E Corian is about 65% cheaper than a Group 9 granite. Likewise a Group A is 45% less than a group 1.
Try me, I'm a granite wholesaler. (That means I buy containers of the stuff and supply the people that sell it to the people that fit it for kitchen companies and B&Q and such - which is a lot of mark ups).0 -
  Project Management and Moben are not on the same planet never mind understanding the concept of planning for tradesmen and time lines !!!
My kitchen is finally finished now and looking good but only down to the fitter !!! Finished 6 days after was told it would be finished (Sorry 4 days as weekends don't count in their book !!! - Time must have stood still for us with no cooking facilities to miss these 2 days !!) with the Gas man finally turning up on 3rd attempt. Mind you we are on a new estate and those toms toms are so confusing !!
Anyhow bottom line avoid them like the Plague as you do not get your money's worth in regard to having the kitchen done in the time they state and the amount of time spent on phones repeating yourself and dealing with people who can only blame others for their shortcomings !!!!!!
Moben = NO THANKSSaving the planet whilst saving pennies !!!!!!!0 -
Had granite in my last kitchen. Could put hot oven pans directly on it and looked fantastic when it was polished. (microfibre cloth) But if you even put a coffee cup on it and the sun was shining you would have to bring out the microfibre cloth again. This was black galaxy:-think other more patterned granites may be more forgiving. Have twice as much worktop in my new kitchen and chose duropal laminate flash black , which has a square profile, really good quality and is SO much easier to maintain. Have mixed feelings because I loved my granite but I wanted a low gloss laminate and am happy with this compromise .0

OOO i just had granite fitted!
It looks beautiful, (black with silver stars - Ebony black i think).
I thought it would cost the earth, but managed finding a company on here who were cheap............. but clearly experienced and they done a great job.
I've only just got them, for christmas so have not abused them to much yet, but they still look like they were installed yesterday!

Hi majjie, I see you are in the Midlands so maybe I can pick your brains, or anyone else's for that matter! I want to adapt a used Corian worktop to fit my small kitchen. After having Corian in a previous house I really loved it & we've already fitted the sink unit as it stands alone. I contacted a big Corian supplier locally who quoted me £1500 for the work of re-cutting & fitting the rest (an L-shaped piece 6' x 9') I thought that was very expensive, as I don't need any more Corian. Now I am looking for a fitter in Leicester or Leicestershire who has experience with that type of worktop, as I am hoping an individual fitter would be cheaper, but don't know how to find one. Can you or anyone else help?0

Hi Snowwhite ... sorry can't help you with your Corian. I don't know any fitters that deal with it themselves. Most fitters and kitchen companies will use "fabricators".
Try searching for "corian fabrication" in Leicester and contact any of them that deal with the public (rather than just being trade suppliers) ... there are a few around these days.
HTH
MajjieI write blogs about kitchens ... and I design kitchens for a living ... I just love kitchens!0
