Do you have a second job?

I know there is the up income thread, but I wanted to find out how many DFW have second jobs, what do you do and has it helped you towards clearing your debt?
I'm seriously considering getting a second job to once and for all clear my debt. Is it worth sacrificing spare time for? Will the tax on second job make it not worthwhile? Was your boss at your regular day job cool or weird about getting a second job - assuming you told them.
Cheers

I've had 2 jobs for almost 9 years now, a regular 9-5 office job and 11 hours in a shop evenings/weekends.
It doesn't really go towards my debts, money from my main job pays all my bills and debts, anything I get from the shop is my spending money, money to go out with, buy clothes with etc.
I don't think the people at my main job are aware of the 2nd one, I've only been at my main job for 3 years and I can't remember if I told them or not when I started. My previous emplyers knew and were fine about it.
I pay about £13 tax per week on my second job so I earn about £65 and take home c£52. The way I see it, it is £52 more than I would have otherwise!!
EDIT: Actually, if you include Mystery Shopping as a job, then I have 3!!

Excellent thread - thank you!
I too am also contemplating getting a second job, which I would like to aim any earnings at reducing my debts, but like OP would like to hear from others about the pro's and con's of holding down a second job.....** Proud to be dealing with my debts **LBM - Jan 2009 _pale_ : £24,802.21 :eek:February 2010 :silenced: : £18,078.47 (not including OD)July 2010

I have a second job on top of a 35 hour 9-5. I used to do 6 hours a week but now just do ad hoc shifts when they need cover as it became too much. I did it for about a year though. Now when I get a shift the earnings go straight to my debts.0

:hello: Hiya my lovely,
We had a huge debt to pay off and without our second jobs we wouldn't have (almost) cleared it by now. (Getting almost everything onto 0% or low life of balance rates was also vital.)
I have a p/t school hours job Mon - Fri, an evening and weekend job that I do 3 or 4 shifts a week at, plus I babysit, mystery shop, eBay and sing/MC with a couple of wedding bands when they need to expand their sound or expand the amount of time they can fill.
My son's in a band that does parties etc for people who'd rather hear a Killers song than a Boney M one, and he keeps threatening to draft me in on one of their gigs, but he hasn't so far.
(Which is good - cos although I'd find it hard to say no to him, I think my fat spangly dress covered @r$e would stick out a mile on a stage filled with skinny morose black-clad under 21s!)
I quite often find it tough going and knackering, but I take regular breaks at school holiday times using paid holiday so I've always got time off to look forward to.
Some weeks are madly busy and some are a bit easier so it's not the same grind every week, and I tell myself I'll do this for another 3 months and then I'll review and see if I need to cut back, or give something up. When 3 months is up I usually decide to keep going for another 3 months cos the amount of debt that we've cleared is a strong motivating factor.
Hubby and the kids all muck in with the chores, and my daughter especially is great at doing the washing up for me so that I can get started on my eBaying early etc. If it's just she and I for tea she cobbles something easy like scrambled eggs together - and I start eBaying even earlier!
I thoroughly recommend getting a second job - even if only for a little while. I think having one completely free day off a week can help you keep going.
One of my friends works on Friday night and Saturday lunchtime and then has the rest of Saturday and Sunday as her "weekend" before going back to work on Monday, and one of the girls Iwork with at the restaurant just does Sunday from 3 - midnight and Monday night after work which nets her about £90 a week after tax and pays for her social life without interfering with it.
Give it a go!

i was thinking of doing this but didn't feel it would be worth it after tax. instead i have been mystery shopping, matched betting, ebaying and various other mone making things i have found out about on here.
i have been making around £300-£400 per month doing this and most of it can be done from home.0 -
I have just seen two PT jobs in my local paper so I will give them a call to chat through what they are looking for, including the much needed wages!
I guess its a case of, if you don't try, you'll never know.
Also, there is always the option of throwing the towel in if its not working out. I just don't see how else I'll reduce my debt as I am only just about affording all my minimum payments on my CC's.
Sorry I digress!** Proud to be dealing with my debts **LBM - Jan 2009 _pale_ : £24,802.21 :eek:February 2010 :silenced: : £18,078.47 (not including OD)July 2010

Great - thanks.
How does it work with being registered as selfemployed for the MS - as that is what puts me off a little....?
Sadly I have nothing to ebay - or have you made a business yourself somehow? Guess I just need some inspiration!** Proud to be dealing with my debts **LBM - Jan 2009 _pale_ : £24,802.21 :eek:February 2010 :silenced: : £18,078.47 (not including OD)July 2010

you will have to complete a tax return at the end of the tax year for mystery shopping. this should be quite straight forward as your 'business' is very simple. there is plenty of help available on the up your income thread.The_Golden_Goose wrote: »Great - thanks.

with ebay, i surprise myself at the amount of junk i find to put on there! it just keeps appearing!
matched betting is also a good little earner if you can get your head around it.0 -
I have a 2nd job in a pub. It doesn't pay much - probably my petrol bills for the month, and an extra £10. However, it means that I get out in the evening and after a day in school, I have to interact with adults, which is good for me!

It is tough (and I only do a few hours a week for this 2nd job) and most weeks I don't want to do it. However, just that little extra means I don't need to worry about making my car run.Natwest CC - [STRIKE]£2545[/STRIKE] now £0 :j
Overdraft - £2668 - to be cleared by February 2010

Hi there,
I have a second job that I've had now coming up to almost 2 years. I started it as I wanted to buy a property and knew that my income although really good from my main job would not cover it. In fact the second job doesn't cover it just covers my petrol for the month. I earn about £280 a month after tax for 8 hrs a week. I work in a call centre and hate it with a vengance  but the hours suit me perfectly. In fact I changed them about a year ago; they said they wouldn't change I said goodbye they then changed their mind. I think they are quite impressed with me due to my main job. But hey every penny helps. I have had second jobs in the past as well and give up when I become fed up with them. Must admit I am at the fed up stage with this one now; so not sure how much longer I can stick it out. But then I do have alot of debt to repay; so lets see how it goes.
But if you have the energy as you can always make the time I would say go for it.
