Advice on rental agreement name change fee

Hi all,

I'm a tenant in a flat which is managed by an estate agent. One of the other tenants (there are 4 of us) is moving out, and we've been told by the agent that we need to change the name on the contract, and will be charged a £200 + VAT "administration charge".

This seems to me to be totally excessive for what amounts to printing out the contract again with a new name. I've since checked our rental agreement and this charge is mentioned, so to some degree it's our own fault, however surely there must be a "reasonable" requirement to fees like this, similar for example to the overdraft charge issue. In fact, I would think it should have to be even more reasonable in this case as we haven't done anything wrong by asking for a name change.

I've queried it with the agent and they just say it's for "administration costs" which doesn't help. Is it possible to challenge charges like these? How would we go about it?

Thanks!
