Legal minimum age for raising an invoice

Is it possible to be too young to raise an invoice?

I work for a promotions company, and normally we don't work with under 16's because of all the red tape.

We've just take on a 17 year old, who tells us he can't raise an invoice for us to pay because he's too young.....

Now I'm pretty sure the only thing you need to worry about with under 18's is entering into a written contract, there's no problem with paying them money.

However, my boss has asked me to check it out. So, is there any reason why an under 18 year old shouldn't raise an invoice for a company to pay?

  • Is he self employed? I can't see any reason for him to not raise an invoice as the minimum age for being self employed is 16 IIRC (therefore to get paid an invoice would have to be made) - maybe he doesn't know what to do or what the invoice should look like?
