Loft Insulation

Some Advice to anyone considering insulating thier loft.

Our home was in dire need of insulation as the original had withered to virtually nothing and we noticed the upstairs quite cold. My immediate thought was to contact the usual suspects British Gas, Tesco etc who along with many others charge about £200 using the governament grant scheme.

Before booking these guys to come out i did a simple exercise in costing up the insulation material from a well known outlet who along with the other main DIY are doing a buy BOGOF offer in insulation. The result, well i was able to insualte my loft for a total of £56 and about a day of my time.

So before rushing headlong into booking these people to come out just have a quick look as to whether it's cheaper to do it yourself.........£144 saved here.

Don't know your calculations, but I saved money.

most DIY stores loft insulation is about £3-5 per sq metre and say 150mm thick.

To get the 270mm recommended you would need two layers.

my loft area is 84 sq metres so that would cost me £252 to 420 even on a BOGOF deal.

energy saving trust charged me £219 and that included pipe lagging and an insulation surround and lid for the water tank.

You're right, i should have made that point clear.

Our loft dimensions were 4m x 9m, not large at all.

With a BOGOF deal you would need a loft area of 10m x 10m or greater to make savings using the grant method, anything less than that then certainly worth doing your sums.

We used 100mm thick insulation but doubled it up to make 200mm on top of what was already there.

Please note i'm a basic level DIY'er and was merely passing on my thoughts to other members if it helps.
