Overdraft Removal

Hello.

I had a relatively large sum of money payed into my bank account and the next day my bank, God bless them, removed my overdraft. There was no warning or notice, and I have still not received a letter informing me of what they have done. I only found out when I went into the branch.

I wanted to know is there anything I can do regarding this? Are the bank(Halifax) within their right to do this?

Regards

Luke

Yes, they are. Any overdraft is ‘payable on demand’.

That’s the nature of the beast!
  • hi

within their rules yes, morally its not a good thing for them to do. you need to know their reason really.

ultimately all you can do is vote with your feet and move banks.

  • Hi
The same thing happened to me when I paid a large sum of money into an account with an overdraft. They removed the overdraft then I had no money left to withdraw. I rang up their HO and complained to no avail, eventually after an hour on the phone with a really horrible person (who I have since made a formal complaint about) who patronised and upset me, I gave up and went into my local branch the next day. The manager in the branch rang up HO for me and they said as long as I could bring in documents to support the fact I needed the money to pay bills and live, they would re-instate my overdraft. This is what they did. Saying this though I have since had more problems with the Halifax and have set up a new account with a different bank. I am trying to reclaim charges of over £8K from the Halifax. they are the most unhelpful, uncooperative bank ever!!! hope this helps though.
