  • Bt cut the base rate for the price of these calls, don't think they are free yet though. It aint unique to NHS either, our local police stations non emergency number is an 0845, presumably because it isn't based in the same town.

According to the BT website all calls to all numbers starting 0845 and 0870 are free NOW from BT landlines.

My understanding is, that the government are considering forcing the NHS and others to use free phone numbers. There is an official review in place into whether surgeries and Health Service organisations should be made to use local-rate numbers, such as those starting 03, or whether they should be made free 0800 numbers. The Health Minister, Ben Bradshaw, is in charge of the enquiry. In the meantime, if you have a landline from BT you won't be paying for calls to 0845 or 0870 numbers anyway.
