Travel insurance flying from Dublin airport

I have booked flights from Dublin airport to Prague in May for a trip time of four days in total. However I cannot seem to be able to get travel insurance as a result. As we are resident in the UK we can't get Irish travel insurance and we can't get british travel insurance as our trip doesn't start in the UK!

Has anyone else who has flown from Dublin managed to get travel insurance or is it necessity? Is it a risk worth taking? I have never claimed on travel insurance before but theres always the first time for everything.

If you're resident in the UK then your trip is UK to Dublin to Prague. Standard travel insurance bought in the UK will cover this.
  • I have looked at the terms and conditions for a number of travel insurance documents and they all say the same you trip must start and finish in the UK. I even spoke to someone at travel insurance direct and she confirmed this. The policy would only cover my trip from the UK to Ireland which I am not bothered about for cover cause I've got family there etc so I never take cover out for going to Ireland.

So anyone who thinks they are covered for such a trip are not.

However I have just had an email from Ryanair whom I am traveling with to Prague and they have said their poilcy will cover me for either UK or Eire residents so they can't be all that bad or can they?

But your trip does start and finish in the UK, it's just that you want to visit two countries in the meantime! I can't see how there can be a generic ban on multi-country trips. What about people travelling in France who cross over to Germany, Italy, or Spain? Or get the ski-train to Switzerland travelling via France? Or me, when I went overland from Ukraine to Lithuania via Poland?

I think the problem is likely to be that you want the start date for the policy to be the day you leave Dublin for Prague, rather than the day you leave the UK. Try again with this new date and see what they say. And please do let me know if I'm wrong!

caeelan I know what you are going though ,put it this way if you are leaving N/Ireland and get T/I over the internet you should not becovered for part of your jouney as I done it last year ,I only found this out by chance and had to check insurance companys here in N/I to get covered ,the best one I found was Abbey. If you do get T/I on line the only part of your trip that will not be covered is the flight from Dublin,ie if there is a delay or anything like that
  • Omlette is right!

I work for a v large T/I company it is a term and condition that all trips must start and end in UK. ( unless you are emigrating)

You live in N.Ireland so your journey will start in the UK and end in the UK when you get back home. We Insure people from N.I, Jersey, Isle of Man etc all day every day.

Just insure from the day you leave the UK or N/Ireland until the day you return back to N/Ireland.
  • I understand what you are all saying but my understanding of it is that if I take out a TI policy to fly from Dublin I am not covered for that trip. So if you are traveling to say France to Germany you may not be covered just double check with the providers.

I was not prepared to take out insurance and pay for it and then find if I made a claim they would say I wasn't covered. It does say clearly on the Ryanair website that both residents from Britain and Eire are covered I've found that anywhere else, and I've checked quite a lot to be sure.
  • I was going to try and take out annual multi trip insurance and that was stated the same you've got to start and end your trip in the UK that was when I phoned travel insurance direct who told me I wouldn't be covered for the trip from Dublin to Prague. It doesn't make sense I know but I'm sticking with Ryanair for now.

Yes, we know you have to start and end the trip in the UK, but if you book it to start from the date you leave the UK to the date you arrive back you will be fine. An annual policy will cover you too, as long as the trip doesn't exceed the maximum duration (mine is 42 days at a time). You're only having problems because you don't want cover for your time in Ireland.

FWIW, I've just thought of a good reason why we must be right about it... What about small countries that you can't fly to direct from the UK? Are you really suggesting that insurance companies would refuse to cover you for places such as Lichenstein, Andorra, the Vatican, Macedonia, etc? The only way to get to these places is to travel via another country.

But you're not travelling from Dublin to Prague. You're travelling from the UK to Prague.
  • Hiya

AFAIK (and all insurers are different) You will be covered for your trip in general but problems will arise if & when you need to claim for missed departure/delay as this will usually cover you from your dept point from the UK.... And in this case the dept from the UK is NI to dublin...... So you wont be covered from Dublin to Prague
