Just looking for some advice really............
Were wanting to get a new living room door as we havent been burgled in over a year (WOOHOO!) and I want one with glass panels in so I can let some light into the hallway.
Where do we start? Does anyone have any recommendations of where to buy? Or how much we should be looking at spending?
Thanks x

I have bought doors from Wickes before now and been happy with the quality. They have a few available (there are more on the site):

Wickes will deliver. It really depends on whether you want a traditional or modern style. The links I have included are for timber doors, but if you are intending on painting, you can also consider an MDF door.
All those included on the links are under £100, some are under £50. Remember, you will need to budget for handles and hinges which can add up.Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Can I use the old hinges we have on the door at the minute? and handles?
Were looking for a white door with top half glass panels on it?
Also, we seem to have a large space to fit i think it's about 800mm wide and 2.2 Height.

Sorry didn't appreciate the challenge of the height of the door.
Yes you could reuse the hinges/handles if they are in good condition or can be cleaned up. As far as the height is concerned, this seems really high so you might have issues buying a standard door at a diy shop.
I guess you have a few options:
1) Alter the height of the door by building up the top and moving the architrave and buy a standard door cheaply. Not ideal, but likely to be cheapest. B & Q do primed doors, or you can paint it yourself.
2) Look at reclaimed doors which may come in larger sizes, this will probably require you to do more work with it (usually stripping although some reclamation yards offer a dipping service). You may then need it resizing. Personally, as I am in a similar situation, I have done this, but sadly they usually aren't cheap as they have all been timber and reclamation doesn't usually follow as being the cheapest option. The other possible negative is the position of the door handle might not be right for you (ie it might have holes for keys, etc even though you don't need them). I have found a link here (select Walcot Yard, then doors, then glazed - some are external but some are internal doors) but it depends on where you live and obviously it is the luck on the day as to whether they have something suitable.
You may even get lucky with ebay as I have seen many on there, but stripped they are not cheap. Whatever the option, you will need to paint it yourself.
3) Contact a carpenter and get his opinion on costs, etc. Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Thank you for your help. I am unsure if my partner has measured it right as he can be hopeless at time, so I have contacted our homebuilders and they are going to give me the right measurements. We live in a new build (just over a year) so the hinges etc should be ok but we shall have to see.

To be honest, if its a new build, I would be very surprised to hear it was the height you mention - 1900 approx is usually standard.

wondering if anyone can help, my measurements on the door are -
height 1970
width 860
I am struggling to find anywhere for the width of the door, does anyone have any ideas of where might sell such wide doors??
Thanks:j MOVING TO AUS 12th JULY 2009 WOOHOO :j0 -
That is a very wide door. Mine measure 1970X840. You could refit the frame to reduce the size.
Howdens do a good selection of doors. Any decent joiner will be able to advise and source a door for you. I had two oak doors with glass panels fitted to my lounge for £860. The old door furniture was re-used."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
