I have used Quies wax ones in the past and always ended up with the same kind of prob after prolonged use. I did find Quies were the best though.

for cheap squidgy foam ones that expand in the ear, try a motorbike shop. they often sell them in huge bags or just in pairs if you are a light user.0

Sorry for the delay, I forgot to check back after posting. I don't have a link for the classic or Classic II earplugs I get on ebay, I usually just buy from whichever seller has the best price at the time. Just search on ebay for classic earplugs or ear plugs and you should get a few to chose from. They are very much like the boots foam ones, I used to buy them till I found these on ebay...have never bought them from boots since. They aren't quite as soft as the boots ones, but I found them just as comfortable.0

1. You may be able to get special plugs called Swimmers Ear Moulds made at your local Audiology Dept. Your friendly GP might refer you direct especially as your ears are getting sore.
2. White tack...sounds silly but one of the ENT surgeons at the hospital where I work recommends this to patients who need to keep water out of their ears following surgery. Make sure its a decent sized piece so you don't lose it.
3. If you can get Surgical Grade cotton wool (doesn't let wisps come off into wounds) you can coat this in vaseline and use that...again, a decent sized wadge.0 -
Yes, I wondered about suggesting coating the ear plugs in vaseline to provide a barrier?Signature removed for peace of mind0

I find that the sponger type are better when they are quashed and within 20 secs or so they form almost a tight barrier. I get mine from Superdrug for 3 for about £2.
The ones I seen on ebay are slightly different mine are thinner at one end.0 -

I have actually been doing this for the last few nights and have not had sore ears at all, so a really good idea. It also makes them easier to put them in your ears.
Still trying to get some wax ones to try though, boots didn't have any when I went there.0 -
i wear them every night and have had no problems, i get them from here
