Landlord Withheld Bond - Spent None

Hi
In 2004 my wife and I moved into an unfurnished property and paid a £500 bond to the landlord.
When we moved out in 2006, around 18 months later, the landlord withheld £300 of the bond, citing a Baileys stain on the carpet (which we had attempted to remove with a professional cleaner) and a small portion of the wallpaper where the vinyl coat had stuck to the back of our sofa.
My wife found out today that some friends of ours have since moved into the same house which appears to be in exactly the same condition that we left it in.
My question is - do we have any chance of reclaiming the withheld monies if the landlord it seems withheld them fraudulently?
Thanks
Christian

3 years later? I wouldn't think so.
The stain and damage occurred and may have made it harder to re-let or may have resulted in the LL accepting a lower rent than they would otherwise have obtained.0 -
LL could argue it took him 3 years to remove the stain
