Need to trace an old vehicle....sentimental reasons...
HI, this is a strange request for help but I am stuck
....years ago I used to drive hgv's for a living, one in particular was special to me as I drove abroad in it, it holds dear memories for me and I am trying to trace it but dont know where to look. I have been on the dvla website and done a vehicle enquiry search, I have found out the vehicle was last taxed up until 1/10/1999 but apart from that, there is no more info. The vehicle was last being used in the Portsmouth area and I was wondering how to find out how to locate this vehicle, I particularly would like to buy its registration number to transfer to my car ( sad I know to some lol) .
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have searched for forums etc but cant seem to find a starting point to look.
TIA

What a great story! I can't give you any answers apart from maybe contacting the DVLA and asking if they can help you?
Good Luck!0 -

If it was last taxed in ’99 I’d be surprised if it’s still around. It might be sitting in a scrap yard but would have been broken for spares or weighed in for scrap.
I think the only way you can get the number for your car would be to own the lorry and for it to have a current MOT or equivalent.
Good luck with your search but I think you’re going to have an uphill battle.0 -

Under certain conditions, DLVA will past on your details to the registered keeper, if there is one. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/AdviceOnKeepingYourVehicle/DG_40220670

In this circumstance DVLA would not release the information.
They would just advise you to check the vehicle enquiry service, which the OP has already done.
OP - if the vehicle has not been taxed since 1999 then it's likely to be scrapped/sitting in a yard/exported as other posters have mentioned.
The plate could only be transfered with the registered keeper's permission and the vehicle needs to be taxed and tested.
Sorry to be bearer of bad news.

Thanks for all of your replies, they have been a great help. It is increasingly looking like the vehicle has been exported as on the dvla vehicle enquiry the status against export marker is "export" .0

So even if I did find the vehicle and even bought it, you are saying I would have to tax and test it before I could transfer the number plater? I didnt know that.:(0 -

Yes. Those are the rules of the Cherished transfer/retention schemes.
Also, if it has been exported and you managed to track it down you would have to re-register it with DVLA and to do that it would have to be taxed/insured/MOT'd too.
Sorry!

I guess you've googled the registration plate - both with spaces and without - i.e. "A123 ABC" and A123ABC - just in case?0
