Travel insurance

Hi,
can anyone tell me if i need travel insurance to go to Spain? or will one of these EHIC cards suffice?

It is best to take travel insurance as an EHIC will only provide a certain level of cover which is normally just the equilavelent of our Accident and Emergency.

Travel insurance for spain is fairly cheap.

Of course, if you get robbed and/or lose your passport, the EHIC card would be as useful as a share in Northern Rock, while decent travel insurance would help you out. However, the EHIC card does mean that travelling to Spain without insurance would not be as foolish as uninsured travel to the USA, since you would at least have a basic safety net.

EHIC cards only work in "state" hospitals. A great deal of the hospitals in Spain are private, particularly in tourist areas.

The EHIC card only works if you have it with you when you are needing care - it's no good in your hotel room/handbag - it must be with you at all times.

Your EHIC card would not repatriate you. So if you had a serious medical problem and you were going to take some time to get better, better to be back in the UK near home and family etc. With travel insurance cover, they arrange for you to come back to the UK with medical staff accompanying you if necessary.

A comprehensive travel Insurance policy would provide a local English speaking agent to come and translate for you if you were in hospital and needed care and their was a language barrier.

With th exception of Cyprus, medical care in Spain is nearly the most costly in the EU. If you had a serious medical problem, i.e heart attack, you could pay up to £20,000 for care in a private hospital.

Travel insurance policies are available from £3.50 to Spain just get one!!

OK so I work for a travel Insurance company and I see the claims that come in. For that reason I would NEVER travel without a policy.

I agree, travel insurance is relatively cheap and definitely worth it if something happens. I can't imagine travelling without it.

Hi,
In last post I said that why can't you go for more options? I the market there are lots of options and choices available which are really value for money.
The bottom line is insurance is only important while it bought by good provider.
